  • We all want to be more consistent, and yet once that starts happening it’s surprisingly easy to get stuck there and lose the spark that seeking brings. Don’t wish away your current state too soon!
  • Having a range of apparently unrelated paintings not only feeds the insatiable curiosity beast, it also allows your main body of work to develop further even while you’re working on similar pieces.
  • When you reach the inevitable Ugly Phase, or simply a place in the painting where everything looks and feels a bit ho hum, the first thing you’ll probably hear in your head is ‘Oh crap I’ve ruined it’. This never has to be true. In fact, it’s a place of power. A tiny shift of perspective, from ‘it’s ruined’ to ‘huh, now I have something to respond to’, means the difference between frustr...

  • Japanese people use 10-day periods called jun (旬). Each month is divided roughly into three 10-day periods:
    • The first (from the 1st to the 10th) is jōjun (上旬, upper jun)
    • The second (from the 11th to the 20th), chūjun (中旬, middle jun)
    • The last (from the 21st to the end of the month), gejun (下旬, lower jun).
  • These are frequently used to indicate approximate times, for example, "the temperatures are typical of the jōjun of April"; "a vote on a bill is expected during the gejun of this month."

  • practice - sketch or paint your ideas in a safe place until you're more comfortable with them, before transferring them to the canvas.
  • imagine the worst case scenario - then think of ways you would deal with it if it happened. Play around with it and become comfortable with the idea of tackling problems.
  • check in with your body - notice where you are feeling tension. Do some movement to counter it: go for a walk, dance, etc.
  • talk to someone - find someone reassuring to talk to and let yourself be vulnerable with them.
  • be spiritual - in whatever way works for you. Spend time in nature, connecting with deities, etc. Open yourself up to seeing things in a new way.

  • honour your pace - it doesn't matter if you don't create every day, or for 5 minutes at a time. It doesn't matter if it takes you months to finish a piece. Take the time to watch your creation unfold.
  • deliberately limit your supplies - if you become overwhelmed, pare back to just a few supplies or a limited colour palette.
  • try new supplies & techniques - if you feel in a rut, try something new. A new technique, art form, media, colour. Go somewhere different.
  • let go of expectations - all artists have off days. There's no need to judge your work or how you're feeling when you're creating it. Just go with the flow.
