butterfly feeder

  • mix 9 parts hot/boiling water with 1 part sugar. Stir until dissolved and allow to cool. (Some sources say 4 parts water)
  • Make a hanging feeder out of a small, wide-mouthed jar. Tie twine or wire around the edge and hang it from a tree. Place small stones in the bottom of the jar for stability.
  • Check the water level regularly and top up so the level is near the rim.
  • many species love fruit: bananas, berries and other fruits that go mushy when over-ripe are best. Place them in a dish of sugar water and put it in an elevated spot.
  • butterflies also need salts and other minerals which they obtain from drinking water from puddles. In Summer, create your own puddle in a wide dish, with dirt in the bottom. Add things for them to land on such as shells, stones and bits of wood.
  • many species are attracted to red, orange and yellow, so decorate your feeder in these colours.
