in fic specifically

i'm not going to go into the content policing discourse stuff, but these are just. really minor things that i hate lol

  • changing names in genderbends, cis(genderbend) or otherwise
  • pleas for the love of god if non-western characters are not shown to be canonically regularly exposed to western pop culture, don't make them reference/experience it without like... cultural awareness, or context. by which i mean "if it isn't an obvious study/exploration about how (japanese) characters experience and respond to western media such as [avatar the last airbender] [similarly/differently]." like it doesn't have to be a long paragraph about this stuff but at least self-aware ok? ok
  • TONGUES ARE BIGGER THAN YOU THINK
  • SO ARE FINGERS
  • referring to characters by a nickname in narration UNLESS they have embraced it as a nominative identifier relative to themselves. e.g. if albus scorpius (from hp) is often called al by basically every other character, introduces himself as al, and "albus" is more of a formality. it would be like if a char usually goes by their middle name that people tend to not realize or forget that it's their middle name and not their first name. same goes for nicknames - if a char does not introduce themselves as [nick/name], then the narration should also not refer to them as [nick/name]
