  • “There is no point treating a depressed person as though she were just feeling sad, saying, 'There now, hang on, you'll get over it.' Sadness is more or less like a head cold- with patience, it passes. Depression is like cancer.”
  • “I don't want to see anyone. I lie in the bedroom with the curtains drawn and nothingness washing over me like a sluggish wave. Whatever is happening to me is my own fault. I have done something wrong, something so huge I can't even see it, something that's drowning me. I am inadequate and stupid, without worth. I might as well be dead.”

I started getting very bad social anxiety and depression through high school as well as having no self confidence. After high school I spent my first year barely leaving my house other than to go to work (which was where I would struggle even more with anxiety as it is a high stress environment). I was huge on avoidance and ending up losing most of the (small amount of) friends I had. I began seeing a doctor and a psychologist towards the end of the year and also starting taking medication in November. Since then I have taken an active role in pushing myself to go out more and see people and get out of my comfort zone. Some of these things may seem small and insignificant but to me they are massive improvements because I got to a point where I couldn't even go and get groceries by myself without panicking and crying. I am cutting out people who have been stopping me from improving for one ...

  • (God) will not be used as a convenience. Men or nations who think they can revive the Faith in order to make a good society might just as well think they can use the stairs of heaven as a shortcut to the nearest chemist’s shop.
  • [To have Faith in Christ] means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. • Cafuné - Brazilian Portuguese – “The act of tenderly running one’s fingers through someone’s hair.”
  • Connaître versus savoir: In French, there is distinguished difference between knowledge that results from recognition and knowledge that results from understanding, respectively.
  • Dépaysement - French – The feeling that comes from not being in one’s home country.
  • Duende - Spanish – While originally used to describe a mythical, spritelike entity that possesses humans and creates the feeling of awe of one’s surroundings in nature, its meaning has transitioned into referring to “the mysterious power that a work of art has to deeply move a person.” There’s actually a nightclub in the town of La Linea de la Concepcion, where I teach, named after this word.
