june has been a suprisingly long month. at least it feels like it. i've had a lot (a lot) of free time on my hands, and therefore books have been a priority. Something which i've enjoyed.

  • The Crippled God by Steven Erikson. the last book in the malazan book of the fallen series, but not the last we're going to see from the world of malazan. it was quite the finale! i really enjoyed the two (three) major plotlines going through the book and thank god for the internet because there were a lot of people i didn't really remember and that kind of thing. the last ten pages or so i cried like a baby.
  • A Shadow in Summer by Daniel Abraham. this book disappointed me utterly. i wasn't feeling the plot, the setting or the characters at all. it's all been hyped up for nothing, in my book. it was exhausting t...

one of my favorite things to do on a sunday is searching for potential books to read. i've discovered that i'm getting quite picky. these are a few of my criterias:

  • dark characters. i'm pretty much fed up with your every fantasy setting where there's something good fighting something evil. the world is not black and white, people!
  • an interesting magic system. originality. something i haven't read before. not just... it's magic, you know, man? not really...
  • exstensive world-building. this is very very important. needs to be something i haven't read before. i am so fucking tired of your average middle age setting like a song of ice and fire. i want something exotic and new. avatar-ish even.

i just read the first line of a book call...

remember i ordered those books a week ago? turns out i won't get them before i leave. which is a shame, because i don't really have any books to take with me when i go to barcelona (apart from saturday, which i haven't finished yet....). this just makes me really frustrated. GAH... anyway... i've been picking around a bit on the interwebz and discovered a new series i'm dying to get my hands on! the series is called the Entire and the Rose and it's written by Kay Kenyon.

  • Bright of the Sky, book 1
  • A World Too Near, book 2
  • City Without End, book 3
  • Prince of Storms, book 4

it sounds really interesting because it's a mix of fantasy & science fiction. i still must confess to being a SF virgin when it comes to reading. definitely will be checking this out!

turns out, when i have a schedueled reading plan, i also get diciplined. it's like doing your homework. if you don't do this in time, there will be hell to pay. except that it won't, but i'm tricking my mentality into believing it anyway. i take some kind of perverse pride in telling people how much i've read. ANYWHO, i decided to extend my list for march, and the reason that is is because it's march 3rd and I only have one book left on my original list. another thing i take pride in. i therefore took the opportunity in ordering three new books today.

  • Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Been hearing some good stuff about this trilogy and the cover is enough to intrigue me.
  • The Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Assassins is always a theme that is going to interest me.

sooo... turns out i managed to read five books out january and the month isn't even finished. i'm pretty proud of myself AND for sticking to my reading list. dicipline, ladies and gentlemen, karina the enchantress has it! and now to the verdict:

  • Mistborn book one by Brandon Sanderson. i loved this one. the world fascinated me utterly and the magic system was brilliant. the characters and plot were also fantastic and there was never a dull moment! and i love the unexpectedness that this book had tons of.
  • Well of Ascenscion, Mistborn Book two by Brandon Sanderson. not as good as the first, but it was definitely interesting and a necessary book. however, i did think there was a little too much talk and not getting down to the action. but it was still a very good book!

  • Will finish the Malazan Book of the Fallen Series by Steven Erikson. As of 2th June I am currently in the process of finishing book number 3. Something which means I have 6 books left to read.
  • Soulless by Gail Carrigar. Can't wait for this one, actually.
  • Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris. This is the 10th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series.
  • Start the Mistborn-trilogy (?). This is still a big gaping hole. Will there be enough time? Probably... Will I finish it? Now, that's another deal. I have been meaning to read this trilogy for quite some time and quite frankly I feel I owe it to Mr. Sanderson to do so.
  • I'm also quite interested in starting to read Nights of Villjamur by Mark Charan Newton. However, this book is yet to be released.... damn. September 1st or someth...

i guess the year 2006 was the year when i got seriously intereseted in books. i've always been, it's just that i didn't have that kind of dicipline and scheduel i have now, where i plan which books to read in advance. to think about it, that's a rather recent developement. anyway, a friend of my gave me the great idea that i should write down every book i've ever read (i don't remember all of them ofc, but the ones i remember to have read), note down when i read them and comment whether or not these were any good. and this is part one:

  • Lord of the Rings (1-3) by JRR Tolkien (spring-fall 2006). This is the book that got me, like so many others, interested in fantasy literature. I struggled with this one and found it really hard to finish it. But I'm kind of proud of myself for doing that. I would reccomend this to anyo...

it's sunday and for most people sundays mean a state of headache, constant nausea and the stomachs screaming cries for pizza or other such unhealthy things. in other words, you're statistically likely to find yourself hungover. today, thank god, this isn't the case for me. however, i am considered to be a spreader of joy and i thought i'd share some of that joy here on listography. through songs to help your ever aching head:

  • John Mayer- Assassin. i mean, how awesome and relaxing is mayer's voice?
  • Fleet Foxes- Your Protector. this is probably one of my favorite songs ever.
  • Damien Rice- 9 crimes. not only does this song contain just about the right amount of emo to be perfect for a hungover sunday but it's also fucking brilliant.

  • Tales from the Flat Earth (rrrreally excited about!)
  • Tigana
  • Mistborn
  • Black Wine (one of those books who are finally back in print!)
  • The Sinai Tapestry (also really excited about. Something tells me this book should be higher on the list...)
  • The Deathgate Cycle (This is apparently some big name in fantasy and also a series most fantasy buffs should read, so therefore it's up on the list. Even though it got published ages ago. Whatever, it's got dragons and that'll satisfy me no end!)...

slowest reading month this year, i think. at least in terms of books. i only read three books in july, but to my offence, i was reading a dance with dragons by george rr martin, and that is one hell of a long book.

  • Mechanique- A Tale of the Circus Tresaulti by Genevieve Valentine. definitely one of the best books i've read all year. it was just so different from everything else i've ever read, and that was such a huge refreshment! also, what an amazing debut book. looking forward to reading much more of Valentine's in the future.
  • Smut by Alan Bennett. i bought this book on a whim at the airport getting home from the roskilde festival. partly because of the cover and partly because the back cover text. it was about sex and i hadn't read anything sexy in a while. this books is comprised of two parts, two stories. ...

i am currently, and probably always, on the quest for the perfect series. in the past, i have been able to discover them, but i am confident there are several more to be found. my search has almost exclusively been kept to the fantasy genre, be it dark fantasy, urban fantasy or epic fantasy, i am confident in saying i have a fair estimation of what's out there. don't get me wrong, i will continue reading fantasy literature, probably for the rest of my life, but since i've started the entire and the rose-series, which is a mix og scifi and fantasy, i have learned that to find the books that will appeal to me, i need to broaden my horizon. which is why, in july, i'm planning on reading my first ever steampunk novel. yeah, you heard me.

this month started promising with me reading a lot of Ian Mcewan (my favorite author). i was all freaking out because i ordered new books which i thought i wouldn't be getting before i left to go back to school. turns out i got them! a day early even. i was very eager to finish those as well, but turns out you don't do a lot of reading when you go to barcelona in march. had it been in the summer, i would have, as i would have read a lot on the beach. but going on the beach in barcelona in march is... cold. anyway, here's the list!

  • The Broken Kingdoms by N.K Jemisin. this book really belongs on the february list, but i guess i thought i would be reading it in march instead. oh well. i love these books. they are fantastic and i love the world and the characters and the gods.

  • The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, book 2
  • The Weird of the White Wolf, book 3
  • The Vanishing Tower, book 4

  • Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnigt Tides, The Bonehunters, Reaper's Gale (summer 2010). All of these are from the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. My to do list this summer was to get as far as starting Dust of Dreams. That has of yet not happened.

to be honest, i completely forgot this place excisted, and then i remembered and now i've been reading my old lists back to back. cringing at the grammar and spelling while at the same time being rather amused at my literary musings, maybe it's time i wrote a new book list? things have changed a lot since that last book list. i mean, a few years to begin with. i've just completed a bachelor in english literature & creative writing and i'm currently standing on that great threshold of life, opportunity and potential otherwise known as "i need to get a fucking job and sort my life out"-spiel. • Forenkling by Geir Gulliksen
  • Drømmefakultetet by Sara Stridsberg
  • Ikke forlat meg by Stig Sæterbakken

i'm thinking there will still be room for more, i am however reluctant to add more to the list as i don't know if i will be in the "mood" for reading these books come april. right now, all i really want to read is fantasy. i get excited like that sometimes.

I just finished my reading list for febuary a couple of minutes ago, and i tell you, it wasn't pretty. more about that later, now; the verdict:

  • Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson. I've realized that after reading Erikson I've come to demand so much more of fantasy. I don't know if that's a bad or a good thing. Dust of Dreams did not let me down. The last hundred pages were intense and gave me chills all over the place. I'm nervous for the last installment of the series, though.
  • Hero of the Ages by Brandon Sanderson. It wasn't as fast moving as the first book, but it was still a page turner and a good book to complete the trilogy.

I've officially given up on my former to-read list. I've decided to take it one month at a time and create some form of schedule.
