  • Ano Natsu de Matteru: a surveillance alien comes down to earth and accidentally kills a boy in the process. She revives him and attempts to integrate with human society, but she finds difficulty learning what it takes to be a "normal" high school student.
  • Chihayafuru: welcome to the world of karuta, a Japanese card game where the nation's best means the world's best; the art of this anime is very beautiful
  • Gin no Saji: an intelligent boy who runs away to an agricultural preparatory school after failing to enter a prestigious high school learns about what it means to be successful in life
  • Hotarubi no Mori e: One summer, a 6 year old girl gets lost in the forest and makes friends with a supernatural being who is doomed to die if he is ever touched by a human. (written by the same author as Natsume Yuujinchou)
  • Kimi to Boku: the days of normal high school boys

  • Spirited Away (movie): after unwittingly driving onto sacred ground, Chihiro's parents are turned into pigs and the only way to save them is for Chihiro to work for the very witch who transformed them.
  • Uchouten Kazoku: the lives of tanuki who transform themselves into humans and how they pass the time with tengu and other mortals
  • Uchuu Kyoudai: the story of two brothers who dream of exploring the universe together as astronauts
  • Usagi Drop: after the death of his grandfather, and perhaps out of a combination of pity and curiosity, 30-something year old Daikichi adopts his illegitimate, six-year old aunt.

Action/Adventure:

  • Ao no Exorcist: a troubled young boy, Rin, and his brilliant brother suddenly find themselves orphaned by none other than their biological father: Satan. To seek revenge, Rin decides to become an exorcist.
  • Baccano!: The intertwining stories of a pair of goofy thieves, the Italian mafia, assassins, monsters, alchemists, and immortals that all revolve around the elixir of youth. Comedy, Horror, Suspense. The same author as Durarara!
  • Beelzebub: Oga Tatsumi, one of the toughest juvenile delinquents around, suddenly finds himself having to take care of a baby demon prince.
  • Blood Lad: an action/comedy about an otaku who also happens to be a vampire who meets a human girl who accidentally wanders into the demon realm. She dies before he gets a chance to figure out if he likes her or if he just wants to suck her blood, so he goes on a quest to bring her back to life to find out which it was
  • Chrno Crusade: out of desperation, Sister Rosette forms a life-draining contract with a wounded demon named Chrno, to search for her brother who was kidnapped by the very demon who wounded her demonic partner.
  • Cowboy Bebop: a ragtag bunch of bounty hunters search the universe for their next big target and an escape from their pasts
  • D. Gray-man: the Millenium Earl creates monsters out of recently deceased loved ones and the only way to combat these demons are to send in combat-exorcists.
  • Devil Survivor 2 The Animation: a group of unsuspecting civilians download a popular phone app only to discover that they've inadvertently contracted with demons and humanity's last hope for survival rests in their ability to survive the next seven days.
  • Durarara!: the headless horse(wo)man of legend is searching for her head, which was stolen and transported to Japan for scientific research. As she continues with her search, she runs a courier service for various underground organizations and becomes a figurehead for the net-derived gang "Dollars." Monsters both human and inhuman clash head-to-head in both twisted love and gang war. The same author as Baccano!
  • Escaflowne (movie): having always felt like she doesn't belong, Hitomi wishes to disappear, and then she truly does. The next thing she knows, she finds herself in a foreign world as a prophesied maiden who will decide the victor in a war for the throne.
  • Hagane no Renkinjutsushi < Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Brothers: in a world where alchemy is practiced under the law of equivalent exchange, two brothers commit a taboo in trying to resurrect their deceased mother. In the act, they both sacrifice parts if not all of their bodies. Now, just wishing to return to normal, they go about in search of the legendary Philosopher's stone, which is said to be able to defy all alchemical restrictions.
  • Inuyasha: in ancient Japan, a beautiful shrine priestess guarded a stone whose magical powers were sought after by men and demons of all kinds. Her downfall was her love for a half-demon named Inuyasha, who she sealed shortly before her death. Several thousands of years later, in modern Japan, the reincarnated shrine priestess, Kagome finds herself haunted by and even literally pulled back into the past where she accidentally destroys that stone and is forced to find all its pieces before they fall into the wrong hands.
  • Jungle Emperor Leo (movie): in the hopes of discovering a new energy source found deep within the African jungle, humans destroy the forest which Leo, the lion king, calls home and introduces a fatal plague that infects many forest animals, including his wife and daughter. This is an Osamu Tezuka work.
  • Katanagatari: a unique swordsman and a strategist travel Japan in search of 12 legendary swords.
  • Kill la Kill: do clothes make the person? In a high school where uniforms grant students super powers, Matoi Ryuko challenges the Student Council President to a fight in order to learn the truth behind her father's murder.
  • Metropolis (movie): in a city in the future, a psychopathic tyrant builds a super-weapon disguised as a building in the hopes of having the robot he commissioned to replace his deceased daughter rule the world. This is an Osamu Tezuka work.
  • Mononoke-hime (movie): as the humans expand their territory, they destroy the forests and incur the wrath of the nature gods. Cursed by one such god, Prince Ashitaka leaves his village and searches for a way for humans and gods to peacefully coexist. This is a Studio Ghibli production like Spirited Away.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji and several other teenagers are enlisted to arm themselves in enormous mechanical suits known as Evangelion to fight "Angels", similarly giant creatures who are determined to destroy what remains of humanity.
  • Psycho Pass: a futuristic utopia run by the Sybil system--a giant computer that determines societal threats by brain frequencies in order to prevent crime--is not all that it seems
  • Saikano: the Last Love Song on This Little Planet (movie): because of her body's high compatibility with the latest military technology, a normal high school girl is forced to become Japan's ultimate weapon against her will and slowly begins to lose her humanity, just as she was about to experience her first love.
  • Samurai Champloo: Fuu enlists two rogue samurai in search of a man she believes to be her father.
  • Saraiya Goyou: during the age of samurai, a kind-hearted ronin gets tricked into joining a band of kidnappers led by a man haunted by his past
  • Shingeki no Kyojin: in a world where man-eating giants roam the land, Eren Jaeger, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlart join the military in an effort to fight back.
  • Steins;Gate (+ep.25): a self-proclaimed mad scientist, Okabe Rintarou, and his group of rag-tag lab members inadvertently create a time-machine that he discovers can prevent the death of his friends and the advent of a third world war (it's difficult to like the main character in the first few episodes, but the story gets super interesting and the ending might make you cry several times).
  • Suisei no Gargantia: a space soldier hurtles through a black hole to a paradise once thought lost to humanity
  • Sword Art Online: an MMORPG becomes a life and death reality for the 2000 participants stuck in a virtual reality game
  • Tiger & Bunny: in the future, superheroes are sponsored by major labels and capture criminals on TV for points, but the motives of each person behind the masks range from wishing to become a singer to seeking revenge.
  • Wolf's Rain: at the end of the world, shape-shifting wolves of legend search for Paradise.

Romance:

  • Ah! Megami-sama (movie): after the escape of an imprisoned god, the love between a human and a goddess is tested with the fate of the world at stake.
  • Aishiteru ze Baby: a playboy suddenly finds himself stuck babysitting his cousin and enlists the help of a quiet girl in class.
  • Amnesia: a girl travels through dimensions, seemingly reliving the same weeks over and over with different potential boyfriends; based on a dating game
  • Brothers Conflict: another reverse harem anime about eleven step brothers all vying for one girl's heart (I was unusually weak to this anime because I was all for Azusa but was rooting for Yusuke but am also in love with in-game Masaomi...argh! Unlike most harem anime where I already have an idea of who will/should get the girl, I liked this one because MANY of the candidates were good choices ><)
  • Chobits: in a world where highly advanced robots are indistinguishable from handsome or beautiful humans, it is not uncommon to fall in love with them, despite their inability to feel emotions. But, perhaps not all of them lack this ability. This is a work of CLAMP, the same as Card Captor Sakura.
  • Hakushaku to Yousei: in a time where most people have long stopped believing in magic, a man claiming to be the Earl destined to inherit the Fairy Throne kidnaps a young fairy doctor and sets off on an adventure across Europe.
  • Hoshi no Koe ~ Voices from a Distant Star (short): a young couple separated by war, find their love stretched thin by space and time.
  • Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo (Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below): a student and teacher journey deep underground on an adventure to resurrect their lost loved ones and to find what their life has been missing.
  • Inu x Boku SS: a sheltered half-demon decides to leave the toxic and suffocating environment of her home and moves into a condominium filled with others like her. There, she meets her personal and extraordinarily loyal bodyguard.
  • Kaichou wa Maid-sama: the violent, perfectionist student council president finds herself blackmailed by the class bad-boy, when he discovers her working as a waitress in a maid cafe.
  • Kimi ni Todoke: a quiet, conservative outcast falls in love with the most popular boy in class. THIS ANIME IS SERIOUSLY CUTE!!
  • Kokuriko-zaka kara (From Up on Poppy Hill): a Studio Ghibli movie; a slice-of-life romance between two high schoolers trying to protect their class' beloved club house.
  • Love Hina: a ronin, desperate to get into TokyoU to fulfill a childhood promise with his first lsove, decides to work at his grandmother's dormitory as he studies for the next exam. He belatedly discovers that it's an all girl's dorm. This is the same author as Negima! Magister Negi Magi.
  • Natsuyuki Rendezvous: a man falls in love with the widowed owner of a neighborhood flower shop, only to discover that her husband is still lingering in this world (it's cuter than it sounds)
  • Negima! Magister Negi Magi: a 10-year old wizard-in-training is forced to work in the human world in order to become a full-time master magician. His job: to teach 31 middle school girls English without revealing his ability at the risk of becoming an ermine. The author is the same as Love Hina.
  • Mawaru Penguindrum: with the sudden death of their youngest sister, the Takakura orphans are forced to find the mysterious "Penguindrum" in order to change both their family and the world's cruel fate.
  • Ouran Koukou Host Bu: destitute scholarship student, Fujioka Haruhi, accidentally breaks a very expensive vase while searching for a quiet place to study. Unluckily, her blackmailers are none other than the eccentric Host Club who enlist her to seduce female students for club income after mistaking her for a boy.
  • Rahxephon (movie): a barrier surrounds part of Tokyo, separating two lovers as a nuclear war rages on
  • Ristorante Paradiso: a mellow anime about a young traveler, an Italian restaurant, and the handsome older gentlemen who work there
  • Saiunkoku Monogatari: a young woman who dreams of becoming a government official gets her chance in exchange for teaching the young emperor to be a responsible ruler.
  • Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi (shounen ai): the love lives of various editors in Marukawa Publishing's shoujo manga division.
  • Skip Beat!: after being used and dumped by her first love/Japan's newest musical celebrity, Kyoko vows to get revenge in the entertainment industry.
  • Special A: Takishima Kei is successful at everything, from school to sports, except making his self-proclaimed rival and childhood friend, Hanazono Hikari, realize his feelings for her.
  • Tamako Market: the daughter of a mochi shop adopts a bird who is from another country in search for his prince's bride
  • Vampire Knight --> Vampire Knight Chronicles: vampires who wish to coexist with humans make this attempt by attending Cross Academy - a school for both humans and vampires. Protecting the human students from the night class students are Cross Yuuki and Kiryu Zero's responsibility, but their relationship with vampires don't end there.
  • Witch Craft Works: less a romance than a fantasy/comedy, the story follows a princess reincarnated into a high school boy and his knight in shining armor who is not only the most popular girl in school but also a witch sworn to protect him?

Shoujo:

  • Card Captor Sakura: a descendant of the creator of magical cards, Sakura is tasked with finding and capturing the spirits of the lost cards, before they cause chaos in the human world. This is a work of CLAMP, as is Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and xxxHolic.
  • Full Moon wo Sagashite: a young girl dying of cancer makes a deal with two grim reapers to achieve her dream of becoming a famous singer so that she may have a chance of once again meeting with her first love. The author is the same as Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne.
  • Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne: Kusakabe Maron is a phantom thief who finds and captures demons before they inflict harm on the humans they possess. The author is the same as Full Moon wo Sagashite.
  • Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: a dark parody of the magical girl genre; magical girls are made to destroy the witches that threaten mankind, but what is the terrible secret behind turning a normal junior high student into a magical girl?
  • Sailor Moon: Tsukino Usagi is just a normal high school girl who has a crush on the local Arcade boy until she picks up a talking stray cat who tells her she is Sailor Moon, defender of the Earth against hostile aliens out to steal human lives for energy.
  • Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles: after stepping onto recently unearthed ruins, Princess Sakura's soul and memories are scattered across different dimensions. The only way her love, Syaoran, can save her is to search for them across space and time, but to do so, he must first sacrifice his existence from her heart. The story is linked with xxxHolic.
  • xxxHolic: having always hated being able to see spirits, Watanuki Kimihiro makes a deal with a mysterious witch to be her slave in exchange for ridding him of his powers. The story is linked with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.

Horror:

  • Another: Class 3-3 of Yomiyama North High School is cursed and the new third year class won't be able to prevent their own death unless the mystery is solved.
  • Sankarea: A zombie-flick loving boy and a girl from an aristocratic family stifled by her father's unusual love make each other's dreams come true.
  • Shigofumi (12ep+OVA): not really a horror show; shigofumi are messages from the recently deceased delivered by those whose time has stopped, but one shigofumi deliverer, Fumika, continues to age. The story revolves around her delivery route and the people she meets (omg, episode 9 made me cry).
