• in albus hwang's eyes lie a map that compasses a broad range of emotions and past experience: desire, weariness, adventure; and through them all, one reigns superior—acceptance.
  • here's the short version of the story, because not everyone has the patience to sit through albus' self imposed, not really midlife crisis but something along those lines' self pity:
    • before boseong, minhyun was one of the children to a typical conservative, old money type of family; they had a business that dabbled with natural resources. minhyun cut off his family after he'd gotten his degree, and took his trust fund with him to run off to boseong in order to start a new life and pursue his long-dreamt career of being an artist. he started an art gallery, where he puts up the numerous artwork he'd purchased before he left his family as well as newer things he bought and restored himself. (there are also a couple of his paintings.) it's his main source of income now, as well as having his own paintings sold off to art collectors and galleries outside boseong. maybe it's not as much as he used to have with much less effort (though the money is still a lot, no exaggeration there), minhyun is doing what he's always wanted to do. and he's happy: his life isn't as joylessly corporate as it used to be.
  • from an early age, minhyun has always known if there was one thing he had to live with for the rest of his life, it was art. ever since he'd been taken to an art museum for the first time, he'd fallen, almost helplessly, into the spiral that was art. whether it was a painting, a statue, or even something more modern like conceptual art. at the age of four, minhyun began drawing; at first, they the age-typical drawings of dinosaurs and space cowboys, but as he matured, so did the objects of his drawings. when he was seven, he was able to finish painting his first serious art. a portrait of his mother, and it wasn't terrible. wasn't even half-bad, considering minhyun has always been prodigious when it comes to art.
  • his surname used to be (was originally, actually) kwon. he had it legally changed the moment he decided to stop living the lifestyle of a stereotypical old money middle child, and instead opting to keep the name hwang.
  • the bone-deep resentment begun when his father refused to let him seriously pursue art. in his opinion, art was a fine pasttime and a good enough gala topic, but if pursued as a career, was as good as a bad joke. technically, it wasn't untrue, but he could've gone a little nicer about it. simultaneously, minhyun could've been more forgiving and open about the comment, but minhyun's pettiness goes as deep as his love for art. so, at the age of twelve, minhyun knew that if he ever wanted to be truly happy doing what he loved, there were things he had to be willing to sacrifice. all good things come with a price.
