I will write my thoughts about each and every episode, maybe movie too as i watch (i will document my parents' reactions too) (also nudity counter) (Cagliostro is not included because we already saw it back in january) (always in revision) (also there are spoilers)
Green Jacket Series
Total Nudity Count: 13 (this is for comedy reasons)
(watched 4/22/24 - 6/14/24)
- Episode 1: "Is Lupin Burnin'?"
- (watched 4/22/24) a solid start. lupin's body count took everyone by surprise. i recall my dad making some joke about Zenigata's chin winning the race or something?? also his jaw dropped at the sudden cartoon nipple jumpscare (they were gonna tickle her to death???) overall entertaining. Jigen is mom's favorite she thinks he's the coolest (he is) the opening song is just so 70s (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to interpretation. lupin lupin lupin lupin. lupin the thirrrrdd)
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 1)
- Episode 2: "The Man They Called a Magician"
- (watched 4/22/24) one of the funnier episodes in my opinion. Pycal was hilarious he should come back sometime. This episode solidified my dad's love for the ending song. i liked that they were all going to have dinner together
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 2)
- Episode 3: "Farewell My Beloved Witch" aka "I Love Linda/Lupin" (that's what i call it)
- (watched 4/23/24) this one was good, but also a bummer. why did the bad guy look like jigen's evil twin? dad thought how they were pronouncing the name Linda is japanese was great
- instances of nudity: 3 (total: 5)
- Episode 4: "One Chance to Break Out"
- i love Zenigata so much you guys. it's great to see him get some airtime. anyway, this was wild. both dad and i thought lupin would eat the butterfly for some reason, or it was working with him somehow.
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 6)
- Episode 5: "The Coming of Goemon XIII"
- (watched 4/27/24) i really like Goemon glad he's back. jigen's american, apparently? fujiko telling lupin and goemon the same lie about each other is funny. how many exes does she have??
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 7)
- Episode 6: "Rainy Afternoons are Bad"
- (watched 4/30/24) HIS NAME IS KIDS MEAL?????? rip kids meal. zenigata cameo makes me happy. i'll be honest it wasn't my favorite episode but i still liked it. dad thought the amnesia machine thing was really creative for its time. I LOVE the miniscule little scene where they're about to be hit by a car and lupin pushes jigen out of the way?? with this characterization, i'm certain that lupin would have saved himself before anyone else but not this time! i love all the little moments showing lupin and jigen's friendship(?) it's so sweet. This episode solidified MY love for the ending song
- instances of nudity: none really?? (total: 7)
- Episode 7: "A Wolf Calls a Wolf"
- (watched 5/3/24) Goemon's in the team now!!! this will be fun. this one moved slowly but the end result was worth it. the scene where straight up chops the guy in half shocked everybody
- instances of nudity: none again (total: 7)
- Episode 8: "The All-Together Playing-Card Operation"
- (watched 5/7/24) this was just a great episode??? idk what else to say about it i just loved it. real creative, real funny... i loved how each character got to be present. just really great especially Zenigata i'm just so happy to see him!!!! the little joker guy was neat
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 8)
- Episode 9: "Killer Sings the Blues"
- (watched 5/9/24) his name may be Poon but it didn't sound remotely funny like one would expect. so this was a serious episode... really really good??? fujiko is so studyable i need to delve into her mind (all the characters here are like that but this one's about her) this was a bummer that ruled.
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 9)
- Episode 10: "Hunt Down the Counterfeiter!"
- (watched 5/10/24) slavs: the episode. i don't have too much to say. it was pretty fun and cool. and there's NO WAY miyazaki wasn't inspired by this for cagliostro it's hilarious.
- instances of nudity: none? (total: 9)
- Episode 11: "When the Seventh Bridge Falls"
- (watched 5/14/24) rip Inspector Koichi(?) Zenigata, found drowned off the coast of wherever this is... when Leesa introduced herself it almost became the next Linda. i don't remember too much but it was fun and funny i liked it. i liked the fisherman stakeout.
- instances of nudity: none (total: 9)
- Episode 12: "Who Had the Last Laugh?"
- (watched 5/15/24) this is the episode where dad realized that lupin laughed like jerry lewis. i miss goemon. glad to have another fujiko episode though. lupin was such a little cad it was hilarious. this is when we decided, of all the characters, i was most like jigen, mom is most like goemon, and dad is a mix of jigen and lupin.
- instances of nudity: 3? all lupin. (total: 12) (i'm starting to think i should make a death toll but it would be far too high to count)
- Episode 13 "Beware the Time Machine!"
- (watched 5/17/24) first and foremost LOVE to see the gang genuinely care about each other. best friends forever i love it. back at it again with the conceptually hilarious villains. after pycal and this guy my self insert would fit in just fine. great episode. great ending. mom was so disappointed when she realized lupin only asked to marry fujiko to continue his legacy... (i suggested that it's both) it's 1972! i love when they announce the year in old things.
- instances of nudity: 1 (total: 13)
- Episode 14 "The Emerald's Secret"
- (watched 5/17/24) smiling uncontrollably during the zenigata scenes <3 i learned recently what 'dandy' meant in japanese specifically- apparently possibly something like a well-dressed and/or middle-aged man. zenigata gets called this twice, lupin also has a line about him still working(?) despite his age. anyway this was a fun episode, you can definitely tell there's different directors (no naked people or dead people) i am so in love with zenigata he's the most memorable part of each episode for me. don't even get me started on the dance scene. i was sitting right next to my mom pretty sure she could just see "GAY." in glowing letters pointing above my head (you all know that classic gag) fun creative concept. love jigen and goemon in the chef outfits
- instances of nudity: none (total: 13)
- Episode 15 "Let's Catch Lupin and Go to Europe!"
- (watched/5/18/24) Zenigata is just so absolutely adorable i can't do this chat. super fun! this show is just really good everyone should watch it. nice to see an episode with all 5 even though goemon only showed up a teeny bit. i have minimal thoughts on this one that aren't zenigata-related
- Episode 16 "Operation Jewel Snatch"
- (watched 5/20/24) the ANTICS. the Looney Tunes levels of this episode are unrivaled (thus far) pretty fun. decently funny. love this sort of fujiko characterization. (i mean all of green jacket. i really like green jacket fujiko is that so wrong [i actually don't know what the most popular fujiko is genuinely. green jacket fujiko forever.]) how could they do that to zenigata though :(
- Episode 17 "Lupin Caught in a Trap"
- (watched 5/24/24) goemon's single scene was so good. fun episode (i don't remember a lot of it it's been a bit) this is a quote from later on but it's fitting for here- something about how my mom said she likes this new direction for the series due to there being less dead people and a lot of laughs.
- Episode 18 "Keep an Eye on the Beauty Contest"
- (watched 5/25/24) zeni's boss just casually reading a nudie mag on the job. it was a fun ep, pretty creative in multiple departments (or maybe not, i'm just uncultured, but i don't think that's likely) fond of goemon's involvement that was a good scene.
- Episode 19 "Which of the Third Generation Will Win?"
- (watched 6/1/24) actually makes sense we watched this first day of pride month... Zenigata was so kissable in this one (he's kissable in all of them but you know what i mean! i'm so gay for him it's not even funny)(somehow only the second explicitly gay joke i've made so far, surprising) this one was SO good i think. quite comical made me lol out loud. one of the funniest plans in the show. this show i realize is not supposed to be a comedy but it is to me! great ep. (he's eating beans)
- Episode 20 "Catch the Phony Lupin!"
- (watched 6/5/24) the Rolling Boulder scene was So funny easily my favorite part (i am easily amused) why exactly did it smell so bad in the houses? curious about both in-universe reason and writing team decision
- Episode 21 "Rescue the Tomboy!"
- (watched 6/9/24) unrelated but i ended up explaining to my parents why i will probably never watch twcfm. fond of the train shenanigans i swear i've seen a similar scene in something else but i don't know what... whoever voiced Rie deserves an award or something, personally a big fan of that acting (i'm a fan of all these actors but i'm talking about whovever this is)
- Episode 22 "The First-Move Wins Computer Operation!"
- (watched 6/13/24)
- instances of nudity: 1 (GOEMON?!??!) (total: 13)
- Episode 23 "The Great Gold Showdown!"
- (watched 6/14/24) LOVED this episode :-) i personally think this was a great little ending to this particular series. although specifically Miyazaki's half, definitely very different tone from Osumi's half, but it's not as much compared to other episodes. Zenigata is such a perfect boy. at least according to the amazon subtitles, we see a somewhat similar reaction (to lupin's supposed death, on Zeni's part) to that one scene in episode 4, i think. the gang didn't have as many scenes in this one? but they were all there, i like that. i liked the ending... just swimming off into the sunset... love this show
Red Jacket Series
Total Nudity Count:- (i regret adding this feature)
(watched 9/7/24 - )
- Episode 1: "The Return of Lupin the Third"
- (watched 9/7/24) i'm not sure what's more shocking, how many random guys that died, or that lupin wasn't the one who killed them... solid-ish intro to the second series maybe. i think. kinda fun how they brought back mr. x, from the very first episode of green jacket, and the way they went about it was pretty funny in retrospect. could've focused more on the characters themselves (possibly), but introduced some of their dynamics in an alright way.
- Episode 2: "Wads of Bills Blossomed in the Sunset of Rio"
- (watched 9/7/24) they stole the jesus... the jesus statue spoke to them... endless naked female flesh... (these first eight episode 'reviews' were done some time ie 9/24 or so, after watching them. so writing now, after diving into my memory, i can see the beginning of the show coincides with the beginning of the zenigata torture scenes. how is he alive)
- Episode 3: "I Can Hear Nessie's Singing"
- (watched 9/8/24) so it seems like they made up the song for the show??? looking up the lyrics exclusively directs me to lupin so that's something.
- Episode 4: "I'll Teach You How to Transport Gold Bars"
- (watched 9/14/24) fun fact: i had to watch this whole episode twice (first time being on the eighth, just like lupin the eighth!!!!!) because both of my parents fell asleep halfway through. yeah, that's right, i had a double sleeping event on my hands... anyway the scene at the very beginning where he chains zenigata to the speedboat, the stunt felt like it wouldn't be out of place in some sort of sadistic horror context? like, i've never seen happy tree friends but it reminds me of that.
- Episode 5: "Will the Leaning Tower of Pisa Be Standing?"
- (watched 9/21/24) wowers.. the dolphin army....
- Episode 6: "Tutankhamen's 3,000 Year-Old Curse"
- (watched 9/23/24) i liked his funny curse dance. this is when my mom realized that they were calling goemon "GOYA-MAHN" and she was just so confused... there's one scene at the beginning dad and i made a good gag out of but i can't explain it here, but i promise i'll share it somehow one day... ywah if goemon tells me there's a shadow on his sword that means i'm gonna die or something i'd listen to him, i'd trust him with my life. some egregious zenigata torture in this one though, two separate scenes, the latter culminating in a buttshot???? i really wanna go back in time and ask what it's all for.
- Episode 7: "Venetian Super Express"
- (watched 9/23/24) ok the one joke about jigen driving with the hat over his eyes was really funny, i really liked that one! 8-] hate how much i love lupin's disguise in this one. can't be getting gender envy from this guy now for goodness sake.
- Episode 8: "Would You Like Ukiyo-e Blues?"
- (watched 9/24/24) BDONSONE????? i bet the voice actors that was funny, i know we did! it's like prozd reading the super famicom baseball names. although the "slapstick" involving Zeni is too cruel and upsetting to be funny in most cases (i'm saying this as a slapstick fan)(red jacket be nice to him. no one wanted this for him. not monkey punch not osumi not even miyazaki) but the part where he crashes into the store display front had good timing, made mme chuckle. lupin insulting goemon's ancestor right in front of him.
- Episode 9: "Steal the File M123"
- (watched 9/25/24) dear diary. today i learned why you shouldn't drop the soap in prison. anyway i nearly died when lupin mentioned Snoopy by name, mom was deeply concerned that i was going to hyperventilate or something <-- (diehard peanuts fan). and dad nearly died when Chistopher Walken showed up. zenigata ended up in the drink again... when will the wetness end. but at least he's probably an olympic-level swimmer(?) (or so my mother figures. because japan is an island nation. as she also figures) he's just generally powerful right? in both the flesh and in the spirit. unkillable. indestructible. indispensable but that's not related.
- Episode 10: "Bet On the Monaco Grand Prix!"
- (watched 9/26/24) nearly spontaneously combusted when she mentioned tje Simpsons.... new commercial bumper! dad keeps talking about when anyone falls in this show their legs go straight in the air.. i don't see why there would be a reason? other than it's mildly humorous. goemon is so silly i love him. no no i really must transcend! (he's my second favorite i love him so) i was saying that it's already been half the episode and zenigata hasn't even been mentioned. then thirty seconds later he shows up huh. never heard loon as an insult in action before. sorry this lupin diary is pretty much transforming into a zenigata diary, but, like, what's a guy to do O_o! idk i already forgot what happened in this one ok. ending was great.
- Episode 11: "A Gift for the President"
- (watched 9/26/24) jimmy carter with the bill clinton voice. jigen recognizes goemon's loincloth?? this one got pretty silly, not bad! "he must be feeling his oats" was a little surprising as that's something we say about the cat semi-frequently (lol) this is the third (lol) episode in a row they mention zeni's mother btw. what are they trying to begin, i ponder...
- Episode 12: "The Great Chase in San Francisco"
- (watched 9/28/24) ough... mi pobre querido zeni... took everything i've got to not be like "AUGH MY POOR SWEET POOKIE BEAR 8'-[" out loud. overall a pretty good episode i'd say? had some great lovely scenes and jokes even! idk yet what is sung in the japanese version but hearing wind beneath my wings just reminded me of the one simpsons episode (with krusty and the real bette midler. simpsonheads know what i mean) i'd also say that mr. lorge here sounded like he put a lot of emotion into his acting in this one (idk i was impressed i suppose)
- Episode 13: "Curse of the Jumbo Juju"
- (watched 10/2/24) i don't have a whole lot of thoughts on this one... it had some alright moments but overall i wasn't much of a fan sorry. idk goemon was cute in this one i like him a lot.
- Episode 14: "The Case of the Risible Dirigible"
- (watched 10/3/24) ok, some positively bananas decisions were made on both the writers'/animators' and voice cast's part. the bafflingness of it all made me laugh. (we also had a laugh about the time Mr. Burns was Howard Hughes but that's only a little related) (it only makes me laugh) he's bill and ted.. the zenigata torture was insane in this one who's doing was this. you know nothing like this ever happened in part 1. the camera footage scene was fun though. had to look up the definition of both risible and dirigible for this one (also who rip van winkle is) they called the blimp the Hendenburg btw.
- Episode 15: "Crude Reproduction, Perfect Frame"
- (watched 10/16/24) ok sorry this one wasn't as interesting as the premise made it out to be. it was fine i guess there was a slightly funny joke at the very end at least.
- Episode 16: "Sheik-down"
- (watched 10/22/24) this one had a really funny ending just the last six minutes or so? comical. makes up for zenigata getting beaten up for no reason. today i found out the Lawrence of Arabia was a real person and not just a movie i haven't seen. goemon's PANCE.
- Episode 18: "A Safe Bet"
- (watched 10/23/24) i even lost the love of the woman i left my second wife forrrr.
- Episode 19: "Hell Toupee"
- (watched 10/24/24) hot air balloon thing was neat
- Episode 20: "The Last Mastery"
- (watched 10/25/24) interesting how they changed goemon's origin for this one! i'll personally always prefer his deal in green jacket but this was really neat too. actually liked this episode quite a bit! fond of the ending.
- Episode 21: "Lupin in Paradise"
- (watched 10/27/24) ok this one was a challenge for my mom i'll tell you what. ok bikini boy, cover me!
- Episode 22: "Auntie Ballistic"
- (watched 10/28/24) a bit disappointed that it wasn't fujiko's aunt, but who knows, there may really be an Aunt Bujiko out there.
- Episode 23: "Rats to You!"
- (watched 10/29/24) decent episode but there were a lot of funny dub moments that are starting to become inside jokes. idk yet if it was present in the original but i like that goemon spoke to the rat... he's like a disney princess..(cute scene)
- Episode 24: "The Lair of the Land-Shark"
- (watched 10/30/24) rediscovered the snl skit right before they directly referenced it. i made a "why the long face" joke at least twice.
- Episode 25: "Shot Through the Heart"
- (watched 10/30/24) YOU GIVE LOOOVE A BAD NAME.... funny how they named the woman Linda, as it was also the name of the title character back in Farewell My Beloved Witch! everyone got a kick out of Zeni-gotchas.
- Episode 26:
- (watched 10/31/24) can we cool it with the nazis guys
- Episode 27: "The Little Princess of Darkness"
- (watched 11/1/24) until it got to the racist part? that one scene reminded me of like a discount version of the one cool part in A Boy Named Charlie Brown! overall fun i'd say. ALSO COOL NEW INTRO WAHOO!!!!!!!
- Episode 28: "Revenge of La Nerd"
- (watched 11/1/24) funny title aside this one was definitely not my favorite. it was ok i guess. on an unrelated note i got to show my parents the part 1 intros we missed so that was cool.
- Episode 29: "Fry Me to the Moon"
- Episode 30: “Morocco Horror Picture Show”
- (watched 12/9/24) we’re back baby! lotta racism in this one i think. it had potential but they went the stereotypes route instead. i don’t think i would want to watch this again. at least there was “sharing a teacup with Goofy”
- Episode 31: "Twins Pique"
- (watched 12/12/24) ok this one was already funny conceptually but the dub really sold it. sorry i don't really remember much but the whole thing was ridiculous.
- Episode 32: "Lupin the Interred"
- (watched 12/16/24) another pretty good one i think?? impressed mom with my lupin impressions this time around. cus we were watching the dub... the voice actors were really hammin it up in this one? so i was conflicted as to be sad or laugh
- Episode 33: "A Rumble Royal"
- (watched 12/17/24) this one was fine i guess. it was slow and fast at the same time. there was a puppy dog and zenigata got exploded twice
Mystery of Mamo
(watched 10/6/24-10/7/24)
- LOVED this one it was really good. i'll go more in-depth later but for now it was great. really liked the sci-fi things they were doing, interesting concepts! lupin was a real nasty boy but is still a really interesting compelling protagonist. you hate him but you also want to study him. count how many times i say interesting. especially love how this movie explored the characters' relationships with each other, placing a level of importance on that. i like the idea of having fujiko in such a central role? but i do definitely think they could have done more with her however. and zenigata's appearance had pretty much no bearing on the plot? why even put him in. like how they did goemon though despite his shorter(?) appearance. i like mamo as a villain he's got an intriguing dichotomy going on. and that's to say nothing of the artistic quality of it! overall good solid movie
