• 1: Your Favorite Song

I despise this question. It's impossible. It would probably be easier for me to lift a tractor trailer.

  • 2: A song from your favourite band/artist.

OH LOL FORGOT THIS WAS A THING DUH THE AVETT BROTHERS GO HERE. DUH, IVY, DUH. Hmmm. I have shared several lines from various songs with you but I'm not sure which one to put here because I need you to understand. Ended up with The Weight of Lies because of one little lyric that I think is really, really important- "So when you run, make sure you run to something and not away from" it goes on but that is so important to understand. Don't run FROM things, run TO things. You know? All about perspective. And it can be applied to so many different aspects of life. I kind of try to live like this. Always moving forward, and learning, and growing, and looking for something positive--I try to focus on going towards those things instead of away from the things that are bothering me. Does that make sense? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F2zl4LqSlg Also, when you have time, please just listen to this entire album. It is my favorite of theirs. This isn't even my favorite song off of it, I just wanted to talk about that lyric.

  • 3: A song that makes you happy.

It's a Sin to Tell a Lie by the Ink Spots- every single question is hard and lots of songs make me happy. But I wanted to include this somewhere because it's especially meaningful to me, and I figured this was the best spot. I grew up with my great grandma (Grandma Betty as literally everyone called her, or G Betty if you were in the know) singing this to me, so I've known the words by heart since I was little. Sometimes I would sing along with her. But when I think of Grandma Betty, I think of her happily singing this song. And Grandma Betty was the kindest, sassiest, most caring, best great grandma I could have ever asked for and I am happy to have known her and loved her and been loved by her. I am most certainly not lying when I say I love you G Betty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLE3f0kWjoM

  • 4: A song that makes you sad.

Fantasy Man by The Swell Season- I didn't know which song off of this album to choose because every single song makes me sad even though they aren't all necessarily sad. But listened to this album constantly when I was 14 because I was sad over (Hunter, Josh? Both?). So now whenever I hear it I am immediately transported back to sobbing in my bed while underlining my favorite lyrics in my early teens. I think some of the content is sad, but they're not all SAD songs, it's just that I listened to them when I was sad, and because of that they now make me sad automatically. I actually stopped listening to them because of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAkNe3DhVCU Also, literally anything by Jeff Buckley. 99% chance I will start sobbing as soon as I hear the first note. His soul was tortured, and you can hear that.

  • 5: A song that reminds you of someone.

Good Feeling by the Violent Femmes- Josh showed me this song after the first time all of my friends and I had gone up to my mom's (aka after...stuff, including him saying that he did not ever want to date me. the day after). Perfect timing. Also, I made him play this in the car TWICE while he, Paisley, Mark and I were watching the sunrise (I would like to point out a specific lyric that had me so excited because it was PERFECT for that scenario and probably almost had me in tears: "laughing at the sunrise like he's been up all night"). In both cases there were a lot of mixed feelings (actually the way this song makes me feel is really similar to how Perfect Day makes me feel, if a little (okay a significant amount) less intense, so feel free to reference that explanation. Both songs have always explained good times with him and made me think of him-they were never going to last, and I was always a little heartbroken because of that, but the Big Heart Break was inevitable and I knew that and they both capture that really well). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhedKAhHqK8

  • 6: A song that reminds you of a place.

While my Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles- I chose this because Rachel lives (well, lived growing up I guess since she is now pretty much always in Philly) in more of the country of Lancaster than I do (I live in the suburbs yo). I mean her house is across the street from a farm and the neighbors next to her also have a pasture behind her and own several horses. So, we used to walk a few minutes down the road to this grassy area we named The Pretty Place because it over looked rollings hills and there were always the most beautiful sunsets (remind me to show you the picture above my bed). It was also right next to a corn field and a few hundred feet away from a rustic looking farmhouse and barn. A lot of times when we were there we ended up dancing because that's what we did. While I was trying to think of what place/song I wanted to use, a picture she took of me dancing during one of those times popped into my head. I can't remember if it was to the dance that went with Guitar or Happiness, and we didn't even have music, but I really wanted to include this place. We only ever took one other person there so it was a special thing between the two of us and Rachel played a really big part in my life for a while, so I felt it was important that I talked about her somewhere on here. I guess this doesn't have so much to do with the song, but I think that's okay. Also, Rachel is still an important person in my life but we used to be inseparable and she was a huge influence on me at a time when I was most impressionable. A lot has happened to our friendship over the years, and we've gotten older and have both changed, so naturally our friendship is different. But yeah. I'm tired and Rachel is important. And this asnwer does not really fit the question but OH WELL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3RYvO2X0Oo

  • 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith-this is the one song thatI am 100% sure was played at prom because all of my friends and I sang it to each other. That is something I don't want to forget, and it was kind of the best song to share a moment like that to, because even though the lyrics are super cheesy, they're pretty fitting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkK8g6FMEXE Bad Reputation by Joan Jett-I do not have a "virginity song" but Freaks and Geeks went through a bunch of episodes and this is the theme song so it's as close as I'm gonna get. Also, considering the circumstances, I think it's funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeYn_W14zTU

  • 8: A song that you know all of the words to.

Something by The Beatles- I needed to find a place to put them, and again I wasn't sure what song to choose but I went with this when since we've talked about it before and I am pretty sure I have probably sung the lyrics to you. You know how I feel about this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX92FJ-lwXI

  • 9. A song that you can dance to.

Summer Movement 3 by Vivaldi- okay, so I went with a song that I have actually danced to. This was one of my favorite dances ever, and I was at my best during this time. I miss it, Anna. Also, I have never seen the recording of this and we were supposed to get DVDs and didn't and I reallly wish we had. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=watQ28Fx2Mg

  • 10. A song that makes you sleepy.

Blue Turning Grey by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- I used to listen to this on repeat last year when I couldn't fall asleep. I find it very soothing for some reason. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc9CuH0GJoI

  • 11: A song from a movie you love.

Beyond the Horizon by Bob Dylan- I was going to put My Heart Will Go On but decided to spare you. This is from Boyhood (which you really, really need to watch), which I have only seen once. But it was so amazing that I wanted to put it here. I honestly just looked up the soundtrack and chose a song (and in doing so happened to include Bob Dylan, even if it is not a song I know) because I wanted this movie to be here. Because, Anna. Watching this movie made me feel like I grew up again. It was so understated but so perfect. Easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. (Before you question my taste in movies because I love Titanic let me clarify that there are lots of movies that I enjoy watching that I don't necessarily think are "good"). It is transcendent and I just...so good. Watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NFLVz5rj0U

  • 12: A song from your favorite male vocalist.

Let It Be Me by Ray LaMontagne- You should also listen to You are the Best Thing and Hold You in My Arms. He's amazing (as are Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley and so many others but I wanted to include him). I chose this song specifically because of my interpretation. I think he is saying "I care for you so much that not only would I do anything you asked me to, but I WANT you to rely on me. I want to be there for you in any capacity that I can." And that is so amazing. And I relate, because I always want people to really open up to me and feel like they can trust me and that I will support them through anything. But I just thinks he puts it so beautifully. Ya know? Let it be me, let me be the one to help you through this, or through anything. Dead. I am dead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LWpw3CMCEg

  • 13: A song from your favorite female vocalist.

Samson by Regina Spektor- This was really difficult for me for a few reasons. I have been liking Regina less and less, which I have not admitted to anyone and it actually pains me to say that. I'm just not clicking with her as much anymore. But I felt obligated to use her for this question because I loved her so much for so long. Then, I couldn't decide what song to use. I wanted to use something off of Soviet Kitsch (probably The Flowers or Us) because that used to be my favorite album of hers and because it's lesser known than what I ended up using and I like to think I'm a music snob. I actually still like that album a lot. But I had to go with Samson because "you are my sweetest downfall, I loved you first"-that still gets to me. I loved him first. And only. And it was a downfall for me because so devastating and I lost someone really special to me, but it was sweet while it lasted, and I've tried to make it sweet since it's been over by growing from that. Looking for my strengths and things to change and all that shit, as you well know by now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p62rfWxs6a8

  • 14: A song nobody would expect you to love.

Drunk in Love by Beyonce-I mean, I don't THINK people would expect me to love this? I am ashamed that I do because it's shitty, but this is when I first really sexy danced (lots and lots in my dorm alone and for the first time in front of an audience-of Marli and Kelcey (and everyone Marli snapchatted it to)). I just want to do bad things. OOPS. Also, I think I have a pretty diverse taste in music so I wouldn't think many people would be surprised by anything I enjoy listening to, so I chose the thing I am most embarrassed by. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1JPKLa-Ofc

Also, maybe something classical? I really love Claire de Lune by Debussy-there is something about it. It's so delicate and gentle and kind of ethereal? Just really gorgeous. And maybe people wouldn't expect me to like classical music? Or maybe they would since I danced for so long? I don't know.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvFH_6DNRCY

Or When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars. It was my favorite song to sing along to in my car during my senior year of high school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekzHIouo8Q4

  • 15: A song that describes you

Lost Girls by Tilly and the Wall- 100% hardest question for me to answer, so I avoided it. And now it is the last one left, and clearly I've given up and gotten tired of thinking. Never would have thought to answer with this but I am desperate. When I used to listen to this song in middle school and a little in high school, I identified with girl they are singing to/about. Lost and alone and scared and discouraged. But now, even though I still feel those things at times, it's different...less desperate? So, now I identify with the singers, who are trying to guide someone else through that place. (LOL I chose this song because I was desperate and this is hard work and I'm done. And then I tried to make it fit. K.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_a9x6kpyM4

  • 16: A song that you used to love, but now hate.

Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani- I was 11 when this song came out, I think. And it was catchy and I liked it. Now I can't even listen to 30 seconds without wanting to throw up. I really, really don't like and there's not seem Big Reason, like I disagree with what it says or something like that. I just hate it. And that's all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0lf_fE3HwA

  • 17: A song from an artist you wish more people liked.

Tears of Rage by The Band-I know a lot of people like the band, but not many of my friends do. Okay, like none. And I wish other people did because Holy SHIT. Do you know how talented each of the members were/are? They could all play like every fuckin instrument, and play them WELL. Plus, of course, their songs are amazing and there's so much feeling in them. So beautiful. SO talented. Such an amazing legacy. And everyone needs to appreciate that, like really appreciate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zptgMRMPz6g

  • 18: A song from an album you wish more people had heard.

Pretty Girl from Chile by The Avett Brothers-I have a lot to say. Let me start with this: I have BEEN IN LOVE with The Avett Brothers since I was 12. People only recently started to like them once a big, famous producer (Rick Rubin) came along and produced an album in 2009 (I and Love and You) and they got air-time. Now, some people might say this is because Rick Rubin is a fantastic producer (I don't doubt that he is) and he made them better and that is why they started gaining national attention. I, however, think his name is what got them noticed by big shots and that is why they started to gain more recognition. Let me clarify that even though this is my theory, I think they are an incredible, incredible band and that they don't need Rick Rubin-I actually prefer their music before they started working with him. I just think people don't like them because they like them, I think powerful people liked them because Rick Rubin's name was attached to them and then those powerful people told the general population to like them. You see? So I actually DON'T want more people to hear them because they are MINE. Because I didn't need someone famous to come along and mess with their sound. I loved them. I STILL love them. It's just that somehow, the music (not the lyrics) lost this really special, almost magical, aspect that is hard to hear unless you know it. And I don't think it's as good. Because that is what made them good. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but that was kind of the beauty, you know? I always have trouble explaining this, which is a shame because I want you to understand what went missing and what changed and what is lacking but maybe it's not something I can really explain. Okay. Rant over. It is odd that I don't want more people to listen to them but that I chose this category for them. That's because IF more people HAVE to listen to them, it should be this album. Really, any album before I and Love and You, but this was the first one I knew. And, this was my first favorite song by them. I made my mom play it over and over and over. I would maybe have you listen to something else to understand them, but this was my first favorite so I thought it was fitting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UExzmnZLPdI

  • 19: A song from your favourite album.

Just talked about this, but anything off of Emotionalism. So far, you've heard two songs from this album. This time I will have you listen to Will You Return? www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAMA1kjP3zo (Also, by the end of the semester you will have had listened too all of The Avett Brothers albums. I am making it happen. Just FYI) Dear Prudence by The Beatles- Obvs the White Album. Now, I will be honest. There are some songs on here I don't like nearly as much as some of the others. Like I skip over them when I listen to this. Bad girl, I know. But it was still hard for me to choose. I went with this because it's one of my favorite dances ever. I will perform it for you because it's one of the few I can still remember and because I don't need a lot of space. Also, the message is so beautiful. We're all connected (whole-heartedly believe that) and despite it's flaws, the universe is actually a really beautiful place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-2lMstw6qs There was something else I was going to include and now I can't remember what. UGH.

  • 20: A song you listen to when you're angry.

I don't know that I've been ANGRY recently, but definitely angsty. And for the past year I've listened to anything off of Nevermind by Nirvana because he gets it. Kurt Cobain gets it. But I will leave you with the obvious choice of Smells like Teen Spirit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg. When I'm really angry, like not sad-angry or frustrated, but Pissed off with a capital P (this is rare so it's difficult to say) there's a good chance I'll turn on the Sex Pistols (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc89WTEh-jE) or Iggy and the Stooges (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irskrVvKR1E). Their music is just so raw and primal and that is how anger feels to me.

  • 21: A song you listen to when you're happy.

Valerie by Amy Winehouse- I generally associate Amy with depressing, sad, heartbreaking music. But this song is more upbeat and so easy to sing along to and dance to. Also, when school first started last year I was in Ben's dorm with like Nelly, and Paisley? and a bunch of people and we all sang this sooo that basically made my life. I love moments like those. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMzN9sIFI9g

  • 22: A song you listen to when you're sad.

NOTE- I originally had this at 4, but I realized the song I was going to put here works better there because 1.I listen to Perfect Day when I am ready to let myself feel the sad feels. It does make me sad, but it kind of just like...is part of my sadness? Does that make sense? And 2. the song I was going to put here is from an album that I can't listen to without feeling sad. It doesn't matter which song it is, I automatically want to sob because I used to listen to it a lot when I was having sad boy feels in late middle school/early high school. I can listen to Perfect Day without feeling sad, but I can't listen to Low Rising (or literally any song off of Strict Joy) without feeling devastated. Perfect Day by Lou Reed-I think I've explained this before but it is so fucking genius (ironic that I somehow had trouble spelling that). If you just read the lyrics without knowing the song it mostly seems happy ("just a perfect day, problems all left alone") but Lou Reed's delivery is fucking heart-wrenching. That, paired with the lyrics, creates this inexplicable feeling (that I will try to explain, very poorly). It WAS a perfect day, but it will never happen again. He's mourning. I am mourning. Knowing that you can never get that moment back, that moment where everything was how it was supposed to be and you were who you were supposed to be and why you were supposed to be and how you were supposed to be and you were with who you were supposed to be with and everything in the universe had aligned to create this incredibly special moment...knowing that it happened but it will never happen again? So bittersweet. And he captured all of that. Also, that explanation pretty much sums up how I feel about everything good that's happened in my entire life. I have a hard time accepting that things don't last, and often I WILL get really sad about that, so within the past year or so I've tried really hard to focus on learning and growing from the past and appreciating it rather than being caught up in grief because it's something I can't get back (really difficult for me). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYEC4TZsy-Y

  • 23: A song that you want to play at your wedding.

Tiny Dancer by Elton John- to really understand this, you need to watch the clip. It brings everyone together; it unifies everyone. Everyone's happy, even if it's short lived. And feeling connected, like really connected, to people and everyone sharing in that moment...it is what I live for. It is the most amazing thing. SO, at my wedding, this song will be played and everyone is singing along. I will provide lyric sheets. Maybe it won't be as special because it won't be spontaneous which makes the whole idea of being connected forced/less genuine, but I don't fuckin care for once. Also, when Penny Lane says "You are home"...I just. Wow. HE IS HOME BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL EACH OTHER'S HOME. Even if I have to make it happen, everyone is going to share in this moment of unity and IT WILL BE AMAZING AND MAKE MY SOUL HAPPY. It's happening. We will all be home, together, singing this song. Be prepared. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qW9wqUI4Lg Also, my dad and I will be dancing to Joey Ramone's version of What a Wonderful World. The Ramones are the first band I remember him talking about, and they are one of his favorites bands (if not THEE favorite). It just kind of makes sense for us, I think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-3ox-6WhBA

  • 24: A song that makes you laugh.

Punk Rock Heaven by Mary Prankster- Rachel burnt a Mary Prankster CD for me years ago and I thought it was dumb and I didn't like it but now I think it's pretty fucking awesome. I couldn't really think of a song that makes me actually laugh, but I am amused by this song. Also, I could only find a live version. Sorry. Also, my favorite song on this album, or at least the one I listen to the most, is Mercyfuck. I don't think it's really your style, but damn. When you're feelin shitty about your life this is the song to listen to (listened to this a lot Jr year and made Nelly listen to it. Also wow. Nelly and I managed to keep our friendship thriving while she was living in Palestine during our sophomore year, but it dissolved when we went to the same college. the universe is weird, Anna). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht36AMqru-k&list=PLD6178934C217CED7&index=4

I have included Mercyfuck for you, too. Totally not funny and doesn't make me want to laugh at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSbDJysB03Y

  • 25: A song you want to pay at your funeral.

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong- strange choice for a funeral maybe, but the thing is that I don't want people to stay sad. Celebrate my life! Death is inevitable. Take time to grieve, because that is normal and healthy, but don't forget that there is still beauty in the universe (because. as fucked up as it is, I think the world and life are really beautiful). I guess, don't focus on your grief and let it overwhelm you, I guess is my point. Life is beautiful, and death is part of that. Accept it all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnbLRCIJKbE

  • 26: A song that you can play on an instrument.

N/A b/c I suk

  • 27: A song that you wish you had written.

Ahhh, yes. Bob Dylan should go here. He is an incredibly talented and inspired/inspiring songwriter so it's almost impossible to choose. But yes. Forever Young. It says it all. This is how to carry out your life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtFEzhaNrT4

  • 28: A song that changed your music taste in some way.

My dad has really influenced my taste in music. I mean my whole family has. So nothing really CHANGED my taste, because it's all happened naturally. My taste is pretty diverse, I think. this one doesn't get an answer OOPS.

  • 29: A song from your childhood.

Baby Beluga by Raffi- This is going way back to when I was little little, but I remember singing this with my grandma all the time. It was on a tape or CD or something and I used to make her replay it because I loved it so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtGYtlqrWUQ

  • 30. Your favourite song from last year.

I am tired of answering, Anna. I am tired of choosing favorites and thinking about feels. I just wanna be done and read your answers. So I will leave you with this even though it is totally not true I am just done trying (although I did enjoy this song cause, ya know, it fits). Stay with Me by Sam Smith www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB-5XG-DbAA
