2023

winter update (november 2023)

  • well all the outside stuff died. literally all of it lmfao. even the dill, just bc we had such an early frost and i fully forgot about it. it did grow nicely until then, next year i am probably only gonna do dill and maybe chives outdoors
  • indoor stuff: well, we got a cat unexpectedly! and he does seem to like to eat leaves, so i moved all of the poisonous-to-cats stuff into my room for now. not sure what to do with it all though, i hate having living plants and books in the same room (aesthetic as hell? yes. but at the cost of moldy books) and also i need to be able to keep my room open in the winter bc it gets so cold
    • bought some macrame hangers but they turned out to be way bigger than advertised. i can keep my peppers going in them at least
    • echeveria is leggy again, a beheading is nigh. i'm thinking i might do some cuttings for my colleagues if they're interested?

0715

  • planted dill (better late than never i guess). still have parsley left to plant but i'm out of soil; hoping i can get at least a bit grown before it's too late
  • everything outside is doing ok for now, fingers crossed. except last year's strawberries, rip

0628

  • well all the plants i started inside died with the exception of a few of the mystery seeds my classmates gave me (all i know is they're not basil) and my gladioli so i restarted, outdoors (now that it's hopefully summer? but we had a frost a couple nights ago, ugh):
    • four-o-clocks
    • sage (same mini-greenhouse as the four-o-clocks)
    • the last little packet of seeds from my classmates (chives?)
    • sweet basil
    • thyme
    • oregano

0527

  • got a tiny little snake plant at the plant shop with promises that it is very beginner-friendly even for me, someone who can't keep plants alive
    • carried it all around downtown and then on the bus zipped up in my coat pocket so it has already survived its first toughness test

0507

  • one month later than intended but i have begun!! started indoors:
    • four-o-clocks
    • gladiolus
    • ??? the seeds my classmates gave me (chives, sage, maybe basil?)
    • sweet basil
    • thyme
    • oregano

0123

  • after EIGHT MONTHS of being like "only the spearmint grew. also this spearmint looks weird. i'm not going to eat any, i'll just let it flower"... y'all. it was peppers this whole time

planning for spring

    • leaving wild raspberries where they are
    • strawberries (keep alive thru winter, leave in containers, put down in fall)
    • start jalapenos, oregano, thyme indoors ~first week of april
    • start basil, sage, tomatoes indoors ~last week of april
    • plant peas outdoors ~first week of may
    • plant carrots, parsley outdoors ~second week of may
    • plant onions outdoors ~third week of may
    • plant parsnips outdoors ~first week of june
    • plant dill outdoors ~third week of june

2022

0509

  • started (indoors)
    • cayenne peppers
    • sweet peppers
    • jabanero peppers
    • basil
    • spearmint
  • other
    • beheaded leggy echeveria, repot when hardened

0512

  • started (indoors)
    • more basil
    • jalapeno peppers

0520

  • belatedly replanted echeveria top, hopefully not too late?

0703

  • all that grew is basil (not doing great) and spearmint (thriving)
  • bought two strawberry plants

0920

  • first frost and i still haven't planted the strawberries, so i wrapped them in plastic and tucked them in against the wall, fingers crossed they last until i can plant them, deal with the runners, and mulch them
    • forgot to update but i had like six strawberries and they were delicious
  • spearmint still thriving, one basil is doing a little better but still not harvestable
  • echeveria still alive and unleggy thanks to our climate change summer
  • geranium has been really going through it
  • cut back like ten years of dead growth from a neglected houseplant and now it's tiny, oops
    • bought it some plant food as an apology

0924

  • still don't know if the strawberries are ok, i left them wrapped bc of the hurricane. they haven't blown away, at least
  • the wind unwrapped the plastic from my geranium and it is waving belligerently in the storm winds. ok lil buddy!
  • decided to let the largest spearmint flower because i haven't been using it anyway and removing all the buds made me sad

11??

  • was gonna winterize the strawberries but took them in instead. if you're cold they're cold

1209

  • rip to the basil, which never grew enough to eat, and which reacted the same way to the winter that i have so far (withering, shrivelling, misery)
