Laura is the feminine form of the Late Latin Laurus, meaning "laurel". In ancient Rome, the leaves of laurel trees were used to create victors' garlands. The name has been in use since the 13th century.
It also brings to mind Laura Ingalls Wilder and her Little House on the Prairie series of books.
