✺ THE GOAL: i'm on stage, with my bass slung over my shoulder. the bass feels right on my body, and the audience notice how i tend to the bass like i would a lover - with attention, grace, and gentle caresses. the bass is plugged into an amp and loop pedal. the lights go low and a single spotlight is shone on stage, and i enjoy the silence and the eyes on me as i labour starting the music by a few extra seconds, relishing in the palpable anticipation in the air. my fingers begin to come alive and they play a simple-intermediate riff with understated confidence - i am attuned to the bass - and i tap the loop pedal. i let the loop repeat for a couple bars, and then i build another more exuberant riff on top of it, and press loop. the bass i provide is funky yet grounded, melodically and rhythmically interesting, driving, and thriving. i soon put my bass down and move on to another instrument, but this bassline carries the song and acts as a stable, solid constant amid all the musical vibrance that unfolds on top of it. the musical colour peaks and eventually dies down, minutes later the bass that started the piece is all that remains - i have taken the audience full circle. the bass moves the audience to tap their feet and nod their heads in musical agreement, and they find themselves humming it long after the song has finished. ✺
