Spain
- arboliva (spain is top olive producer)
- armarouge (from bulbapedia -Armarouge is loyal and believes in fighting fair, willing to fight head-on no matter how strong the foe is- this pokemon reminds me of the almogavars that hailed the many kingdoms of medieval spain, they originally came from the crown of aragon. Their characteristics of having a lifelong dedication to war and fighting on the front with light arm and baggage reminds me or armarouge’s loyalty and risky fighting style.)
- snorlax (this is partially a joke of course, but i think its cute to imagine spain and snorlax sleeping under a tree or any other inconvenient places)
- oricorio, baile (giving from the name of the variant, baile means dance in spanish. In spain a very popular dance is flamenco, but i got mixed results saying this variant is based on spanish flamenco and others based on baile folklórico from mexico. Both dresses in those dances have very flowy and layered look to it inspiring baile oricorio’s design. While Im not sure if its flamenco or baile folklorico, i still think this bird resonates with spain’s rich dancing culture)
Portugal
- polteageist (the design of this reminds me of the Portuguese stone art azulejo, and also because portugal introduced tea to england(this doesnt mean portugal invented tea of course))
- spectrier (spectrier is a pokemon that desires isolation and silence, i think the nature of spectrier fits the word saudade, in portuguese it means a somewhat melancholic feeling of incompleteness (in other words a longing for something that is absent)It also derives from the latin word of solitude.)
- yamask, galarian (from bulbapedia -Due to being a human long ago, Yamask retains its memories from before it became a Pokémon- the background of this pokemon somewhat reminds me of a folk ritual from portugal, careto. Part of it symbolizing winter's end and the bringing of spring's fertility (yamask originally being a human) It is a wild and noisy festival like how if someone were possessed by yamask upon wearing the mask or how aggressive yamask gets when its mask is taken away. Ehh however i do not want to butcher the significance of this festival with my understanding, I encourage you to read more about it because its really interesting! https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/discovering-pagan-parades-pyrotechnics-portugals-ancient-mountain-carnival)
- meloetta, pirouette (not sure about this one cause i just put her here to make it equal 💔 i might change later when i do more research)
