Mom passed away 28May2017, 1729hrs, age 63, at TTSH SICU, in the company of dear family and friends.

Born 02Oct1953 to a middle class Chinese family, Mom spent her formative years at Adam Road with her 5 siblings. Her own mother passed away when she was 14 years old, so aunt (her elder sister) became the mother figure of the family. Mom and Dad met in 1972 during their Nanyang University course, when she was 19 and he was 22. Dad dropped out after his sophomore year, whilst Mom joined the civil service 28July1975 after university - a job that she would eventually contribute nearly 42 years of loyal and astute stewardship right up to her passing. It was her first and only job with the Singapore Government. Mom and Dad married 28Jun1978. My elder brother Zhong Cai was born 21May1981; I was born 06May1985; and my younger brother Zhong Qin born 16Apr1987.

  • ah gong had worked in a sawmill for several years during the 1960s. little did he know that it would caused him dearly in the future. the sawdust that he had inhaled would eventually cloughed up his lungs, and caused his tuberculosis. the neighbourhood polyclinic recommended him to take daily injections as necessary preventive measures, which he didn't follow through. soon after, ah gong had to undergo a surgery at TTSH to remove his entire right lung. the operation took 8hours, and it wasn't like the keyhole surgeries we had today - it involved dissecting the entire right side of his rib cage. as a testament to the complexity of the surgery, ah gong had to be warded in the hospital for 5 months thereafter! dad, then a teenager in secondary school, found it difficult to explain to ah mah the horrifying scene he saw at the ward - the entire bed ah go...
