• Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo"

10/10 Highly recommend. It is THE story of the direct victims of the last Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Cudjoe Lewis is the subject of this ethnography, written by Anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston. Her writing allows readers to truly feel as though they themselves are hearing Cudjoe's story. She adapts her writing to fit his accent, and details are well captured. This is a difficult read, touching on dark topics but I feel it is a very important one. Has a permanent place in my library and is always my first recommendation to anyone interested in history or anthropology.
