• Don't sign up for early morning classes. 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. is pretty safe, though. Any later and you run the risk of sleeping the day away.
  • Likewise, never skip the first class of the day. You’ll end up throwing away the entire day.
  • Don’t skip any classes, at all, in the first two weeks.
  • Do all the extra credit offered. I guarantee you will regret it otherwise, especially if you have a plus-minus grading system.
  • If your professor isn’t very effective and it’s a large lecture class like intro psych or calc, find another class and just sneak in to attend the lectures. No one will care and you’ll learn what you need to.
  • Sit up front. Second row is the furthest back you're allowed to go, and in large lecture halls, aim for directly in front of the professor and the board.
  • Get tutoring before it's too late.
  • Keep in contact with your instructors. If you're going to have to miss class or need to clarify something, shoot them an email. They'll be that much more lenient with you if they recall seeing your name on the polite emails in their inbox.
  • Go to your professors' office hours.
  • Don't go to sleep at 2 a.m. just because you can. Your body probably won't protest too much for a couple of nights, but it becomes extremely taxing when the sleep deprivation keeps piling up.
  • Go to extra lectures and seminars for everything in your major and many things that aren't in your major.
  • Keep a small stockpile of food constantly. If it snows, you get sick, or you have two hours to write the last six pages of your paper, you're not going to want to put your boots and coat on to go get food.
