fiction

  • battle royale by koushun takami: it’s the original battle royale lol. if you like lotf you will like this too. it gives you at least a glimpse at all the kids in the class and how each of them deals with the game or dies, which is so satisfying for me
  • one day by david nicholls: i’ve reread this every year since high school. there’s a movie, but the book is much better bc of the details it has that the movie just passes over. it follows dex and em, two people who have a spur of the moment hookup on the day they graduated college, on the same day across 20 years. i love seeing them grow up!!!!
  • all the ugly and wonderful things by bryn greenwood: gentle giant and little girl fall in love. problematic bc the little girl is genuinely a little girl lol BUT it’s so so so compelling. the characters are so full of life!!!
  • tampa by alisa nutting: ANOTHER PROBLEMATIC BOOK. beautiful celeste price, trophy wife of some police guy, moves to tampa florida to become a middle school teacher… because she likes teenboys. enter 14-year-old jack patrick. i like it more for the disturbing way her mind works wrt not getting caught like wtf girl wow
  • how to stop time by matt haig: i’m not done with it but it’s so good so far. main character is a guy who suffers from anageria or the slowing of aging, so he’s lived since the 1500s and still looks about forty-something.
  • the suicide shop by jean teule: i recommended this long ago to dom who is not really a reader and they enjoyed it a lot! it’s a really easy read and the characters are likeable. think addams family-ish has a baby who is sunshine incarnate.

nonfiction

  • how to be alone by lane moore: a series of essays. lane moore is super funny and her writing style is very conversational
  • the lonely hunter by aimee lutkin: about being single / looking for love in the modern day
  • 99 glimpses of princess margaret by craig brown: really interestingly written. i didn’t think biographies could be written this way. it’s just FUN.
  • tiny love stories: a collection of stories from the modern love section of the new york times. you could get the book or just go to the new york times lmao.

comics

  • kid gloves by lucy knisley. about her pregnancy + becoming a mom. lucy knisley has a great style and storytelling voice
  • anything by alison bechdel — fun home, are you my mother, the secret to superhuman strength. i particularly like “are you my mother” but i do recommend reading the books in the order i listed, since that’s the order they came out. her memoirs are verbose and extremely reflective.
  • gender queer by maia kobabe. what it says on the tin. very insightful, i want all my friends who have fucky feelings about gender to read this bc i liked it so much
  • wrinkles by paco roca. a fiction GN about alzheimer’s. :’) makes u Feel
