• Los Liones. Go early (before 10) to beat the crowds. From PCH, turn on Sunset and take the 2nd left onto Los Liones. We usually park near the bathrooms and follow the scenic path to the trailhead for extra (flat) mileage. It's only 1 1/2 miles each way, partly shaded, and there's a bench with a gorgeous 180-degree view of the ocean at the top.

Los Liones merges with another trail called Paseo Miramar. For a more strenuous hike, continue up the steep incline another several miles to the Parker Mesa Outlook. However, I don't recommend this with for little kids.

• Sullivan Canyon in Brentwood is perfect. It's north of sunset.
