- Morro Strand State Beach a couple weekends ago. I'm not a huge fan of beach campsites in general, because they tend to be in parking lots, but the beach itself is lovely -- wide open, relatively calm (but cold!) waters (close in), surfers to watch, gorgeous sunsets, and tide pools -- the kids couldn't get enough. We spent some time in the town of Morro Bay, which we really liked -- lots of funky thrift/antique stores, a farmer's market on Saturdays, and a less touristy/more local feel than Pismo or Carmel. The Wee Shack in Atascadero has great burgers (sliders for the little ones), shakes and baked goods, owned by a really nice family.
- Montana del Oro, a little farther south, and that is a really nice campground, a short walk to the water and lots of trails.
