Margaret is from the Latin Margarita, which is from the Greek μαργαρίτης (margarites) meaning "pearl". The name has been popular since the middle ages. I enjoy the prim sound of Margaret and the cool imagery of a coastal New England autumn that I get from it.
As for the meaning, pearls are thought to impart health and wealth to their bearers. A perfect gift. They are also my birthstone and one of my favorite gems.
