• babysitting, of course. i babysat a lot. and the rate, back then, was $1 an hour. i just read ann landers and some girl was complaining that she was getting paid less than minimum wage. what.
  • michigan state university virology lab. one of those high school summer things. i witnessed for the first time that college students (even grad students) were not much like "adults" at all, they were whiny, pimply, annoying larger teenagers. a big part of my job was making DEF (duck embryo fibroblasts) by pulling live duck embryos out of their eggs and putting them in a blender.
  • state of michigan virology lab. another summer thing. don't remember much except that i had to do a lot of centrifuging and autoclaving. and i decided i didn't want to go into science.
  • university of michigan government documents library. worked there for a few years. when new govdocs came in i typed up their info on an index card and filed them. i think i was making $4.10.
  • wendy's. the summer after my freshman year in college i decided i'd had enough "educational" jobs so i worked at wendy's. i was the lowest on the totem pole, doing the salad bar and wiping tables. i only got to do the "hot bar" when the "hot bar" person was out. it was weird.
  • university of kentucky press. i was the assistant to the director. and i got to do some editing. they loved me, and i have to say it was a great job.
  • a lot of temping. pay's good, though.
  • and that's about enough because then i'll start talking about people and places i am still in contact with.
