I work at a fabulous doggy day care, boarding and grooming facility called Canine to Five. Edit: I no longer work here...but I still miss it! Pros:

  • When we're out in the yard and an ambulance or fire truck passes by and the sirens cause all the dogs to start howling at once.
  • Pug snorts, sniffles and grunts.
  • How cute all the dogs who have had baths look in their new bandanas.
  • Glory and Pounce, the resident felines.
    • The way Glory meows. It's really more of a chirp noise. In fact, her name was going to be Chirp.
    • Pounce, the world's loudest cat. Expect deafening mews upon entrance into the building.
    • Lately Pounce, has taken a stronger liking to me and now only emerges from her hiding spots when I come in the building and she hears my voice. How sweet!
    • How they both camp out right on top of the computer because it's so warm.
  • Forming real bonds and relationships with "the regulars", dogs who are there on a daily basis.
    • Watching some grow up from puppies.
  • When there's not many dogs out in the yard so we can play fetch without there being fights.
  • Being out in the yard on a GORGEOUS day.
  • All the names! So many strange and wonderful dog names. (See my list about my favorite dogs at work and you'll get an idea.)
  • No matter what kind of day I'm having, those dogs are so happy to see me and their wagging tails raise my spirits instantly.
  • In the winter when we have to put cute little sweaters on all the smaller dogs before going outside.
  • Not having to care about my appearance or worry about what to wear to work.
    • Getting covered in dirt and slobber.
  • Watching the before and after transformations when a really hairy/dirty dog gets groomed.
  • Having a very flexible schedule that I create monthly.
  • Spending more time with some dogs than their owners do and feeling like they are partly mine.
  • When owners are so thankful that we love and take care of their dogs and get us Christmas cards or baked goods or give us pictures of their dogs in Halloween costumes to hang up.
  • The one time that I actually got a tip from a customer for taking care of her old dog while she had a broken hip.
  • Leo, my bosses 10 year old pomeranian, who vehemently guards the front desk. Most customers exclaim when they see him because he doesn't look real, he looks like a tiny stuffed Ewok-teddy bear.
  • In the summer when we fill up baby pools for the dogs to splash around in and how hilarious some of them get when they come into contact with water.
    • Flopping in the pool and displacing all the water that took me 10 minutes to fill the pool within 5 seconds.
    • How all of them seem to have a digging obsession in the water. They literally dig like they would in the dirt but in the water.
  • When new, unusual or unique dogs come in like the two 3-legged siblings that arrived the other day.
  • Learning about and being around so many different breeds.
  • Becoming somewhat of a dog-whisperer and understanding dog behavior very well.

Cons:

  • Being outside for long periods of time when it is absolutely freezing.
  • Being outside for long periods of time when it is blazing hot.
  • Getting licked and kissed by a dog who has just eaten his/her own poop.
    • Thankfully, I pretty much know all the dogs who have been past poop-eaters so I can avoid them.
  • When we get a major humper and have to constantly keep disciplining him/her.
  • Having to ban dogs when they are too aggressive.
    • I always feel bad because I think all dogs are good at heart and can be rehabilitated with training.
  • Breaking up dog fights.
  • Scooping up some really disgusting poop.
    • Oh, all poop is disgusting you say? Well, you would change your mind if you had to choose between a normal, solid poop or a runny, bloody one.
  • Seeing some really old/sick dogs in terrible shape.
    • I've had to strap a belt around the waist of one dog to hold her up because her back legs were completely useless. Made me want to cry.
    • Watching some completely blind dogs wander the yard aimlessly, bumping into everything.
    • Picking, no lie, 50+ ticks off an old dog whose careless owner let her wander in the woods.
  • Hearing about the death of a beloved dog.
  • When I'm feeding and every single dog has a different, specific feeding routine and it takes me forever to get to all of them.
    • I've had dogs with special rice and veggie mixtures, dogs that ate entire cans of duck and venison, dogs that just HAD to have warm water mixed in their food, etc. etc.
  • Getting dirty looks from store patrons when I need to run errands after work and I am disgustingly filthy.
  • Someday, when I do have to get another job, having to get used to not having such a flexible schedule and not being able to take time off when I need/want it.
  • After just having the first major snow since I've worked here, how nasty and slushy the yard gets due to the horrific drainage system. Standing puddles of dirty snow and dog pee.
  • Since my boss is just an independent, small-business owner, we don't have direct deposit for our paychecks. All those little, weekly trips to the bank can get to be a hassle and it would be lovely to eliminate them and do something else with that time.
  • Tracking endless amounts of dirt and grit in my car and apartment due to how dirty I get at work.
  • The break in the middle of the day when the dogs take their naps. At first, I thought it was nice having a 2 hour break but in reality, it didn't do much for my paycheck and it ended up being more of inconvenience.
