i promise! (M/M, free)

  • overall: B. enjoyment: B.
  • i promise! is a furry VN about a boy going on a ski trip with his classmates, meeting a ghost, and also discovering hes maybe not so straight. its a very enjoyable experience, though i got the sense it's part of a series i've only just stumbled into. there were references to characters and plots i didn't know about. it's cute, though, and definitely gets my recommendation.
  • plot: B. scott is on a school trip with his classmates, some of whom he doesn't know well yet because he's only recently transferred in. while there he repeatedly encounters a mysterious boy whos definitely dead, but he doesn't seem to realize this. i feel like the ghost stuff is supposed to be the main plot, but it isnt integrated very well, and the majority of the game is just spending time with his friends. however, that's a fine setting on it's own, so no real complaints in this aspect.
  • characters: S. oh, they're very good. i don't consume much furry content, so i dont have anything to compare to, but the designs are phenomenal, and they have diverse, likable, and well written personalities. scott is a very rare oblivious protagonist who actually comes off as endearing rather than annoying. vincent is a character trope that usually bores me, but hes super charming. kevin i liked a bit less than i expected to, but he's interesting. i came off wanting to know all of these characters more.
  • writing: B. it's pretty good. the writing and story are a big focus in this game, to the point where at first i wasn't entirely sure it was a dating sim and not a romance VN. there's an emotional undercurrent in every scene, and scott and his friends face their respective family angsts with a realistic attitude. the romance is cute too, though i think it could use a bit more transition from "friend" to "flirting" in a couple cases. vincents route comes off the best because he's clearly been in love from the start. the prose itself is good as well. the english translation is very good in terms of grammar and readability, but there's a sort of off feel to it in places, like its a bit awkward.
  • routes: vincent > chris > kevin
  • gameplay: D. it's just your typical VN. it's got a decent amount of choices, but there really isn't anything to it. it's usually pretty easy to tell which choice will be good for which boy, but some of the vaguer ones are tough.
  • art: A. it's very cute. the colors are soft, and everything comes together nicely. the characters are all very expressive, despite being animal-people. there are only a few CGs, but theyre very well-done. the UI is a little kitschy, but it doesn't necessarily look bad. its a nice game to look at.
