- Husbands and wives in many respects lived sepearte lives.

- Public and cultural life was a man's affair and men had everything well organized for themselves.

- Sex was not only for propagation and the continuation of the family, but also for pleasure and enjoyment. Sexual gratification in itself was not viewed as something wicked, dirty or forbidden.
- Greek concsiousness had not yet come into contact with Christian morality which physicality and sexuality would be associated not only with marriage, but also with shame, abstinence, sin and punishment.
- Athenians were obsessed with fitness, sport and bathing; culture involved nakedness at the gymnasium, a sporting venue not accessible to women.
- Men appeared not to be affected by shyness and prudery; they were comfortable watching sexual acts.
- Sex was not always seen as a private matter or something to be ashamed of. On the contrary, sex was something that one shared with friends and did in company.
- Symposia are private parties where wine flowed in abundance; prostitutes of both sexes were engaged. The woman of the house remained upstairs in her rooms with her children and slaves, while her husband enjoyed sex and alcohol with his friends.
