• ~St. Helena Island~

Only accessible by guided tour, this island was home to the high security St. Helena Prison that operated from 1867 to 1933. Originally known as Noogoon by the indigenous Quandamooka people, legend has it that the name of St. Helena came about because an Aboriginal warrior, Eulope, (who was nicknamed 'Napoleon') was exiled to the island (then called Green Island Two by settlers). Within three days, Eulope had escaped back to the mainland. Due to a mix up with the real Napoleon's exile on a different Saint Helena Island, the name stuck. Ruins of prisoner-constructed buildings (most of which were demolished in 1925), a stockade, and cemetery remain.
