• ~Sans-Soucis Palace (Palè Sans-Souci)~

Sans-soucis was home to Henri Christophe I, the formerly enslaved King of Haiti who helped bring independence as one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution in 1804 (and also fought in the American Revolutionary War alongside Washington). Christophe conspired amongst other former revolutionary leaders to murder Jean-Jacques Dessalines, after which he was elected President. Sans Souci, located in Milot, was built in 1810 and finished in 1813 atop what was once a French colonial plantation; it was known as being 'one of the most magnificent edifices of the West Indies.' Among the grounds were stables, a prison, arsenal, workshop, hospital, and administrative buildings and has earned it's place on the World Monuments Watch and UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. However, Christophe's reign there was relatively short-lived; he died by suicide in 1820 on the palace grounds. The once bustling palace was heavily destroyed by an 1842 earthquake, and was never rebuilt, but the ruins remain today.
