• ~The Stanley Institute Museum~

The Stanley Institute was once known as Rock Elementary, a one room schoolhouse serving first-seventh graders over the years from 1865 to 1962. Many of the students were newly emancipated. The first teacher, Emma Louise Piper, was also the first Black teacher in Cambridge and she taught for three years before moving to start her own family. The building also served as a church. The museum has maintained the original blackboards and architectural design, and restored other aspects of the interior (although the building itself was built in 1865, it was relocated in 1867).
