• ~Hiorthhamn~

Originally a coal mining camp, the settlement of Hiorthhamn was shortlived- it opened in 1904 but it's longest stint of activity was from 1917 to 1921 under the Spitsbergen Coal and Trading Company. After 1940 it finally closed. Visitors can still hike to see certain abandoned structures such as the coal shipping facility, cableway building, mess hall as well as the cableway tracks down which coal was transported. Some of buildings were originally used in Advent City from 1904 to 1908.(Image Credit: Shaun O'Boyle)

  • ~Pyramiden~

Pyramiden is an abandoned Soviet coal mining settlement located on the island of Svalbard in Norway. Russia bought the island in 1926, but in 1998 after the USSR collapsed and the mines closed, workers and their families left the island en masse. Buildings remain in nearly identical condition, thirty years later. Some still live there, but the isolation, lack of cell service, and the need to carry a rifle in case of polar bear attacks deter from people living there.
