• ~Pena Palace (Palácio Nacional da Pena)~

Numerous chalets decorate the dense forest landscape of Sintra, but the biggest of them all combines them into one. During the middle ages there was an apparition on site of the Virgin Mary and a chapel, Our Lady of Pena, was built. In the 15th century King Manuel I established a monastery there, home to 18 monks- but after earthquake and lighting, the structure fell into disrepair. King Ferdinand II King Ferdinand II (of Portugal, not the evil one from Spain) bought the property in the early 19th century and built the Palace of Pena (which appears at first glance to be a hodgepodge of castles in different architectural styles- Neo-Gothic, Neo-Islamic, Neo-Renaissance, and Neo-Manueline- and colors smashed together), intending to represent examples opulence from all over the world in both the interior and exteriors. After the royals were overthrown during the Revolution of 1910 and fled to Brazil, Pena Palace was abandoned. It was restored in the 20th century and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
