• ~Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis (Shohi-Zinda)~

Shah-i-Zinda, a pilgrimage site almost as famous as Mecca, began over 1,000 years ago as a religious monument to mark the burial place of Kusam ibn Abbas, the Prophet Muhammad's cousin (although many believe he did not in fact die but instead lives in a nearby cave) but between the 11th and 19th century the necropolis grew as more buildings, temples, and mausoleums were added constantly- this led to a showcase of different architectural styles and details throughout time and cultures. Artisans also set up shop along the main road, such as the miniaturist Dadajon Turdialiev.
