- Pot O' Gold, dir. George Marshall 3/5 HEY MA, DANIEL BOONE WANTS TO BORROW OUR TELEPHONE(could be funnier, could be more musical, but a jimmy Stewart picture is always at least watchable if not totally enjoyable & paulette in the caballero from Broadway bit was lovely)
- Five Easy Pieces, dir. Bob Raefelson 3.5/5 (this film falling short of my expectations just might be the whole damn point)(slice of life/character study but in a way that it also really isn't. sad, empty man lashes out at anyone with real feelings. first real emotions he shows that aren't violence is when speaking to his empty, ill & physically incapable of responding father. saw that ending coming, off he goes to ruin more people's lives, but only of they let him. like me sitting there waiting for him to turn around, have a change of heart, better himself. bleak stuff)(felt like it wasn't enough but also maybe that's the whole point. robert is pretty unknowable)
- Nobody's Fool, dir. Robert Benton 4/5 (the specific brand of worn down old man humor in this appeals to me and makes me think of my grandpa john. a little bit of a dick but still pretty damn lovable. adore the small town feeling too)("You know, you're my only consistent source of income." "I don't know why I even come in here.") didn't know Paul Newman punching PSH existed in this world, but by god what a gift it does. old man Newman makes me feel things
- The Mummy, dir. Stephen Sommers 3/5 (the old millennials are lying to you, even for a nostalgia watch it's still pretty meh. not horrible, not great. pretty rachel and himbo Brendan)
- To Catch a Thief, dir. Alfred Hitchcock 4/5 (great gowns, beautiful gowns)
- Summertime, dir. David Lean 4/5 (oh renato! round two where the fireworks mean sex. saw a bit more of myself in her than i wished.)
- Faces, dir. John Cassavetes 3/5 (last 15 minutes saved this movie for me. very mixed feelings on this on but the maria & Dickie scenes are so good, I'dve gladly spent two hours watching their marriage self destruct. and fuck dickie all my homies hate dickie)
- She's Gotta Have It, dir. Spike Lee 3.5/5 (watching this after faces was interesting. in faces sex is treated almost as an abhorrent desire, every other action dressed up to hide away from the desire for sex that veers from hysterical to violent. here sex is freedom. men still suck tho)
- Petite Maman, dir. Céline Sciamma 4/5
- Point Break, dir. Kathryn Bigelow 3.5/5 (it pulls you in like crazy but also it's so fucking stupid 😭😭 can't look away except for the parts where im dying with laughter over keanu's delivery. XFUCK WHY CAN'T I EVER SAY WHAT I REALLY MEAN" VAYA CON DIOS)
- Minority Report, dir. Steven Spielberg 3.5/5 (what the hell is up with hyper-bright, washed out color grading in some scenes?? if it was shot like that the whole movie it'd be ok but only some scenes looking like that really took me out. kinda feels like 3 separate movies at once but i still really liked it.in my Tom Cruise StanTM era, so i didn't even know that cutie colin farrel was showing up, that was a delight. And as a Tom Cruise Stan, i celebrate all cruise runs, but the whole chase sequence was too long and hella dated CGI wise now lol and the score there did not fit the tone of the film whatsoever. John's arc was compelling & gdi can tom cruise make you hurt with just his eyes. Ending felt a little rushed)
- Mona Lisa Smile, dir. Mike Newell 3.5/5 (what a cast. direction was giving tv movie tho)
- Magnificent Obsession, dir. Douglas Sirk 3/5
- Hello I Must Be Going, dir. Todd Louiso 3/5
- Tár, dir. Todd Field 4/5
- Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, dir. Anthony Fabian 4/5
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind, dir. Steven Spielberg 4/5
- Pretty Woman, dir. Garry Marshall 4/5
- Cool Hand Luke, dir. Stuart Rosenberg 4/5
- Air, dir. Ben Affleck 4.5/5
- Designing Woman, dir. Vincente Minnelli 3/5 (cinemascope my life. Love the multiple narrators and i laughed out loud often but it's overall a pretty messy filmThe way they played the ravioli bit was too funny, and the frost shot of the pants absolutely killed me)(dumb man comes up with dumb plan to cook up a dumb story to fool wife: liquor, i have found, makes me very smart)lying men aren't endearing even when they do it for "the right" reasons and they look like gregory peck. get lost mike
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, dir. Richard Brooks 4/5 (how are fathers and sons so gd compelling)
- Insomnia, dir. Christopher Nolan 4/5 (in a movie that features greats like pacino, Robin williams, and Hilary swank, i lose my goofy mind over Canadian ginger snaps royalty Katherine Isabelle & liked a 2 second shot of Emily Perkins lmao. anyways, good enough)
- Endless Love, dir. Franco Zeffirelli 2/5(absolutely lost it at david angsting to kiss' "i was made for lovin you". "I was dazzled" she says about her fifteen year old daughter having sex on the living room floor good LORD)(all conflict with no development, no real characters to be found either. except the Cruise, who isn't even credited. how are you gonna be both weird AND boring, nothing works here. bad writing, horrible editing, not great acting, and frankly i don't much care to see a teenagers breasts, ever, so fuck you zeffirelli)(one star for baby cruise, even if it was only 50 seconds and half of that time the camera was on creep-o's face. and a half star for spader credited as Jimmy Spader)(the song is horrific when you consider the plot of the movie)(Worst thing about this movie is that the best looking and most artistically shot parts are the sex scenes, which i never wanted to see in the first place)
- To Have and Have Not, dir. Howard Hawks 4/5 (was a little tipsy and a lotta tired so i was very unreasonably pissed at him being called steve until i remembered he was harry. like your name is ernest what the fuck are you doing naming a character Steve. anyways, Bacall is Bacall and the story is fun enough. i enjoy a little giggle every now and then thinking about bogart and his lifts. male insecurity is so fun)
- Boogie Nights, dir. Paul Thomas Anderson 4/5
- Western Stars (the narration at the 30min mark is the best and most natural, "in this life, nobody gets away unhurt." "We're always trying to find someone who's broken pieces fit with our broken pieces." and what follows is a truly beautiful song "drive fast".)(felt like i was losing my mind bc Bruce and Patti are strumming away on those guitars and i can't hear a Thing. maybe I'm stupid, maybe it's the mixing but outside of "drive fast" i could not hear the guitars.)(took about 30 minutes for the narration to not feel heavily scripted and hokey, which led to some great beauty. also marked the moment i was finally able to hear the guitar he and patti were strumming the fuck out of)(credits over a man sweeping the floor twin peaks the return sweeping reference at the end lmao)(wait was this all just bruce's audition tape for a roadhouse performance. Sorry David didn't open your emails Bruce)
- Goodfellas, dir. Martin Scorsese 4/5
- Top Hat, dir. Mark Sandich 4/5 ("you mean to sit there and tell me that that girl slapped your face in front of all those people for nothing?""what would you have done, sold tickets?")(I'll never be the same person i was before i heard "isn't this a lovely day")
- The Fugitive, dir. Andrew Davis 4/5 (thought it was going to be your basic action fluff chase movie in the first 30, wound up being much more.complex and exciting. very enjoyable watch)(there is something so personal to me about a man with his sports jacket color turned up)
- A Streetcar Named Desire, dir. Elia Kazan (Blanche: dont hang back with the brutes Stanley: 🧍)
- Barbarian, dir. Zach Cregger 4/5
- Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, dir. Peter Weir 3.5/5
- Carefree, dir. Mark Sandrich 3/5
- Letters to Juliet, dir. Gary Winick 3/5
- Without Love, dir. Harold S. Bucquet 3/5(I had to pause and rewind the "may i take your bags" bit far too many times bc i lold)(a little under baked character wise so it felt kinda boring. the opening scene felt promising comedy wise, but it fell flat)
- After Hours, dir. Martin Scorsese 5/5
- East of Eden, dir. Elia Kazan 4/5
- Rachel, Rachel, dir. Paul Newman 4/5 (just another film like lean's summertime where i see bits of myself in the main character but i don't want to be that :/)(nell looks just like her daddy omg)
- Miami Vice, dir. Michael Mann 3.5/5 (bring on the NOISEEEE BABYYYY idk michael mann probably)(y'all mind if I just fucken.. Slap some grain on this bad boy, idk michael Mann probably)(first fifteen minutes feel like a homemade movie but like in a fun and interesting way instead of cringe)(looks at boat literally called a go fast boat-how fast does that go? it goes very fast)(rip chris cornell)(the digital handheld makes it feel like some survival reality show at times, but the blocking is often incredible)
- The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer, dir. Irving Reis 4/5 (absolutely delightful despite the outlandish and almost inappropriate premise. i was sold by the cast alone but the final 20 minutes seriously skyrocketed this to one of my favorites. from margaret's phone call, to the tick tock club, the door slamming, all culminating in the "i couldnt help overhearing, i had my ear to the door" i haven't had as many continuous laughs at a film in so long. cary grant is so perfect for the role & i adore myrna in this more stoic role. Shirley temple is as usual adorable as can be, that picnic outfit is top notch)("i don't consider geometry a part of life" "you know I'd die for you, only sometimes it's very hard living with you")(alternate title: i suppose you're Wondering how i got here)
- hypnotic, dir. Robert Rodriguez 3/5
- Sweet Bird of Youth, dir. Richard Brooks 4/5
- Harper, dir. Jack Smight 4/5 (the spiritual prequel to the nice guys)
- Pat and Mike, dir. George Cukor 3/5
- Gaslight, dir. George Cukor 4/5(great film. ingrid is so stunning. features possibly the worst final second of a film.)
- The Hudsucker Proxy, dir. Joel Coen 4/5 (i liked it, but honestly it would've been worth it just for the 20 seconds of peter gallagher AWOOOOOGA. jjl's transatlantic accent is hilarious. goofy Newman makes me so happy) 06/04
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, dir. Joaquín Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K Thompson 4.5/5 06/05
- Drop Dead Gorgeous, dir. Michael Patrick Jann 4/5 06/07

- The Graduate, dir. Mike Nichols 5/5 06/09
- The Silence of the Lambs, dir. Jonathan Demme 4.5/5 06/10
- Taps, dir. Harold Becker 3/5 (cruising through the movies #2, baby boy is really baby boying here, especially compared to #1's 20 second appearance in a barely watchable movie. this one is certainly more watchable, though still a lil boring.) 06/10
- Lawrence of Arabia, dir. David Lean 5/5 06/11
- Losin' It, Curtis Hanson 3/5 (cruising #3 i honestly expected wayyy worse but this was actually kinda fun. obviously cheap and overall hit and miss, but i lold at a few parts. tc is such a square here and i love that for him. i thought the opening seemed promising, with a fun slapstick vibe, but once they got into Tijuana it went swiftly downhill. the marijuana bit was hilarious tho. yet another reminder i really need to work "what are you, some kinda wise guy?" into my vocabulary) 06/16

- Postcards from the Edge, dir. Mike Nichols 4/5 06/18

- Holiday, dir. George Cukor 5/5 (the feeling while watching for the first time and knowing wholeheartedly that you'll be rewatching every new year's eve from then on...ahhh. Katherine is such a delight in this and Cary's character is such a sweetheart) 07/13

- All The Right Moves, dir. Michael Chapman 3/5 (alexa play my hometown by bruce springsteen)(cruising through the movies #6)(was not sure i was going to enjoy this after Stef's "not all guys are as.understanding as.me 😇" bullshit over teenage girls not ready to have sex with their idiot boyfriends but his character did kinda endear himself)(there was a lot there that could have made this an 80s classic but it felt very half-baked)(we deserve to see tom cruise cry more) 08/11
