• What have I learned from skateboarding?
    • Interacting and making friends with people with diverse hobbies, careers, life stories, and backgrounds outside of skateboarding
    • DIY ethic to improvise/build spots and question traditional uses of public spaces
    • Questioning authority and thinking for one's self vis a vis "NO SKATEBOARDING" -- why? Who is it harming? What is it harming? Why is it not allowed? Why does it make non-skaters angry?
    • Skate business culture -- not subscribing to traditional media guidelines or mainstream corporate culture -- focus on egalitarianism and true creativity rather than censorship for the sake of losing profits if someone is offended -- friendship over exploitation for status
    • Elephant in the room -- post early 2000s commercialization of skating with money from Nike, Street League, etc. -- what folks still skate for fun, and who is chasing a check and clout?
    • Skateboarding is excellent physical activity for cardio, leg strength, and core strength
    • Skating as something that is inherently its own subculture allows exposure to other subcultures, especially in the pre-internet age (punk, photography, hip hop, videography, graphic design, etc.)
    • Failure and falling down are part of skateboarding. Skating builds confidence that can be applied to all aspects of life off-the-board. In meeting new groups of people, existing in new environments, and having confidence to be one's self without too much regard for the thoughts and criticisms of others whether in the office, on the job, with a group of people hanging out, etc.
