Before you go hitchhiking/train hopping a far distance from your house/home, pack a bunch of gear, walk like three miles from your house and just camp out. If you don't wanna rely too heavily on money, actually try dumpster diving. See if it's something you can actually do in practice. If it's not for you, that's cool but after a few days of just trying things like sleeping outside, eating foraged food and the like, you'll get a feel for whether or not this is something you wanna do for a long period of time.

Honestly though and while I don't advocate anyone doing this ever, if someone just dropped you into a major city with no gear, no food and no money, you would figure things out really fast and you would survive. It would be a total shock and NOT fun at first but you would adapt eventually.

Do you have a driver's license? If not that should be your next goal. Reason is, that is a big dividing line between a job that pays minimum wage and one that pays better, even if the job does not primarily involve driving.

Passport is required for leaving the US. Mexico and Canada should not be missed.

Do you have much experience with camping? Traveling cheaply often means having the means to camp out, cook or bake your own food. If you are short of experience then start helping mom shop and cook the meals at home. Good cooks are seldom lonely.

If you plan on having a phone, download some books and start reading. Self taught men are often well read men.

Download Duolingo and start learning a second language. Spanish and French are pretty useful in North and South American.

Be very careful with vices. Gambling, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, prostitution, pornography will make your money evaporate and steal your time and ambition. Choose wisely.
