Almost everybody was dairy here back then so there would have been plenty of bull calves for oxen but they preferred horses if they could afford it. Took 2 days to and from town in those days with a horse team and an overnight in town, 3 with oxen which meant two nights on the road. Grandpa worked 300 acres in the 40s with 5 teams, usually 3 working and two resting. 50-60 acres of that got retired in the 50s because it was too steep or wet to work with tractors
