Les Miserables

  • We Are Who We Are ★★★★ another You've Got Mail or She Loves Me AU and because of that of course I adore it how can I not. the ending wasn't perfect (big surprise I know) but all in all SUPER GREAT
  • World Ain't Ready ★★★★★ ok I'm giving this five stars purely out of how much I loved it even though I feel like the ending is a bit. unsatisfying (GEE HOW UNUSUAL FOR A LES MIS FIC HUH????) basically its the ideal fake dating scenario and its so funny and awkward. and E basically is like lets be fake boyfriends to raise LGBT visibility at our school and R at first refuses which I LOVE just DEFY that trope DO IT anyway its one of my faves
  • Let Us Speak of a Letter ★★★★ the one where R is randomly 14 with no memories and his adult friends are left to deal with this deeply damaged teenager with internalized homophobia until he turns back. I loved it in so so so many ways however the interactions with E were just kinda. blah. I dunno, they made him so rich and so careful and so academic in his language. I also feel like the ending, while pretty nice, could have been more interesting and less of a departure from the tone and issues of teen R.
  • summer's lease ★★★★ ok I swear to god what is it with les mis fics and unsatisfying endings, like I adore this why couldn't it end with them still kids idc. anyway grantaire is basically sent by his neglectful parents to spend the summer with friends of the family he's only met once and enjolras is also there obviously and its great and sweet and they don't come out in it they just. exist and its happy and I like it. the end however is weird and basically says they kept in touch a year after that summer then didn't talk for like 5 years and then met one day and fucked the end sorry not into it
  • You ★★★★ super interesting take on fake relationship AU where everyone even E for once knows R has a massive crush and because of a bet E has to go out with him and they fall in love and R stops drinking but E doesn't say it was a lie at first and when he does it get's bad. good things: literally every chapter has relationship stuff I love it it counterbalances everything I hate in les mis fic i.e. that we never get to see them happy for more than 2 minutes, I like an E perspective fic and watching his views and thought process change, and I love seeing how much R is just. in love. things that weren't great: the last couple chapters. they weren't bad per say?? just E was super overdramatic and while I was like OK he's acting 100% like I would if I was dysfunctional and codependent again and I was glad he was getting yelled and and simultaneously sympathized but it was a bit. much. and I expected it to be resolved with a lot of meaningful conversation, and a slow build back to romance, but it was really just resolved with a long text with a couple typos (sorry author), a brief chance encounter at a movie theater which i LOVED and then they spend very little time actually talking about stuff and a lot more just kissing. I would really have preferred R setting limits and wanting to really get and understand everything before letting things be romantic again, let alone sexual, and after all the talk of codependency and needing to get better for himself instead of for E it was kinda rushed for my tastes. another fic also said this in a good way "they meant a lot to each other, but they didn't want mean everything"
  • They Write Books About This Sort of Thing ★★ a tentative two which I originally had as a three because while E is depicted as ridiculously stony and frigid in this which i kinda hate I like the world and just. R is a fantasy writer and E is his editor and I loved the ending and E passionate about stuff and I loved Cosette's cameo and R's character and just. interactions with his fanbase. but not enough to make the painfully awkward E stuff and lack of romantic buildup other than sighs and silence mean nothing so 2/5
  • box of secrets ★★★ basically E has been collecting various doodles R leaves around and then we get relationship building and while it isn't wildly original WE GET LIKE 5-6 CHAPTERS OF RELATIONSHIP ????? and its overall good. however as much as it pains me not to give four stars it wasn't a huge standout
  • The "You Dance" Series: Dreams, main; Joy, missing scene; Love, epilogue ★★★★ OKAY so the relationship part of this is (classically) a bit rushed and I wanted way more slow build in that department, howEVER. I loved this. first off it's a college fic where R is a dance major??? and I love it? like he has so much passion for that and like the whole thing of auditioning for troupes and being rejected and blaming it on his looks and not being like. the right type I guess, and self esteem. and his relationship with the teachers. and the fact that it has established past pining. but anyway the whole thing centers around this student creation of and production of an opera which is a sequel to Midsummer Nights Dream called "Midwinter" and R is Puck, a ballet role, and E is Oberon. and its so fascinating????? I adored just the. opera building. and R also choreographs, and has to teach E a bit of stuff which was cool af. So we get a lot of scenes with them and even tho romance on E's part comes in fairly late like. we see them growing to be really close in any case. and E fights for his self esteem its wonderful. also I love fics that are based heavily in arts (cough cough Allegro cough) and use terminology and just talk. about performing. I'd rate the other two like 2 or 3 since they're nice but don't offer much more but this is one of my favs.
  • Easy as 1, 2, 3 ★ ok while I like that it's another dance major R it just. frustrated me. like the pacing and the realism of like being able to genuinely think E likes him was kinda off. ALSO this took this fandom's weird obsession with them only actually being together and happy for one chapter to an extreme and we got a kiss out of the blue, then a fucking time skip and like 6 lines of dialogue the end what the f u c k ?? not unenjoyable but not that good. decent writing style overall just...the pacing
  • (I'm Not) Fluent In You dropped. not awful and I loved the concept behind it and certain moments, but this made me ship this fics version of Floreal with its R more than. with E. also it was very tumblr 2014 in that there was a ridiculous amount of polyamory, gender fluidity, E randomly buying a skirt (?), and also ace E which I personally don't care for because he's already such a statue like. make him love R maybe. maybe don't make 16/17 year olds commit to non-sexual soulmate level relationships or if you do at least set them up better so i can get behind them. all these elements could have worked, but they felt thrown in rather than genuine. case in point the final chapter end note i read where the author talked about researching stuff for a trans character transitioning and it just felt a bit. forced to me. and drawing too much attention to identity and everyone being soooo chill. personally if I was gay/bi Grantaire entering a random school and learning everyone was gay and half of them were in polyamorous relationships I'd probably at least feel a spike of excitement that I could relate, not just like "oh cool." anyway the concept I likes: American R sent to French boarding school by shitty parents, doesn't speak French
  • there's no such thing as home ★★★★ cute as hell boarding school fic with slow build which I enjoy. not much to say it was just fun. also includes a somewhat less good sequel, trouble will find you, where R apparently left for like seven years and is now back and why can't they just be happy why do I make myself read these sequels where this beautiful heartfelt thing they had as kids died
  • Forget Me Not ★★★★ also known as the amnesia fic which would have hurt my soul if I wasn't sick and coughing through it. E and R had a secret relationship which E fucked up and the day they part on awful words he gets hit by a truck and forgets four years of his life. it's pretty slow burn, E-centric altho we get a couple R chapters. some grammar and spelling issues but the author is french so. idc. painful things: E's deep disappointment and horror when he remembers their first time and is filled with hope but met with anger and defeat. amazing things: they get matching flower tattoos and E gets forget me nots (predictable tho lmao) for memory and true love and R GETS A HYACINTH BECAUSE HES THE LOVER OF APOLLO and my life is complete because there's a literary hyacinth reference holy shit anyway really enjoyed it

  • A World of Truth ★★★ they're in the illusion world and everything is happy but sasuke can't trust it and I like everything about it other than the way it resolves and ends which feels thrown together so. yeah nice fic
  • Appartment 402 ★★★ cute college AU where everyone but them assumes they're dating. however not highly amazing, also the author never uses past tense and I get that it's set in present tense but like. for past actions often it's still present?? odd

  • The sun within me ★★★★★ ok so this is a road to ninja au type thing where assume and Naruto get sent there a year after the battle and I adore it and the world building and charasuke altho menma just annoys me in it tbh but. !!! like the dynamic do are OP af in it but idc?? and the way it develops their romance is fun also. and just like. it views sasuke's hate as being a result of Indra manipulating him from the inside and like the sharingan building in emotional blocks including ones for anger and then suddenly int eh road to ninja AU where kaguya was nice and so was Indra etc like. the block gets removed and he starts FEELING anyway its cool and unfinished but was updates like early November ??
  • The Test ★ it was ok and I'm tempted to give it two stars but. eh I don't like the assume characterization. its mainly just. smut. AU where Naruto thinks he's straight but all his relationships go to hell after sex and sasuke has never had anything but one night stands and they argue over it and have sex. that said it isn't a negative star so I did enjoy it just not much
  • Mirror, Mirror ★ again like. characterization is just odd and its mostly an excuse for smut. its a body swap fic set during trying to get sasuke back and he leaves at the end
  • Soup's On ★★★★ ok so this is so close to five starts but the writing style is at times kinda odd (like using complex words but not always using them right) but oh boy. its super super long and its like Naruto is homeless and sasuke's parents died in a fire and he's amnesty and depressed and acting out and has to do community service where he meets him and anyway they fall in love and Naruto stays hidden in his house under itachi's nose oh also itachi has like stomach cancer? anyway its slow build and other than just an incredible lack of Naruto ever interacting with anyone other than sasuke its great. I think it gets sasuke pretty well, showing him as ridiculously closed up and emotionally constipated and w ego issues but like. actually loving as opposed to just cold always. A+ would recommend
  • Opposite Sides of the Tracks ★★★ the thing is this one was p hot but the characterization and pacing was off. anyway Naruto runs away from foster care and sasuke is a rich heir to a business yakuza family who get killed and stuff ensues
  • Paint Me a Story ★★ ok so this is basically art student Naruto anorexic sasuke and while its not...bad, it also isn't great? like the dialogue is a bit choppy and people use words that are just awkward in terms of register, the pacing of how quickly people become friends and infatuated is off majorly, it doesn't develop relationships other than the main one but then adds Kiba to every scene, it has Sasuke bounce between morbidly depressed to loving when he's confronted and I don't care for that, it has him use the word chubby to describe himself which is a p warm fuzzy word for self hate, and it includes like 10 uses of "Otouto" in dialogue and one of "Baka" and that just frustrates the hell out of me. that said I like the characterization and how Naruto isn't an idiot and sasuke isn't all cold and how he actually does want stuff. so yeah like enjoyable but with issues
  • An accidental marriage ★★ ok so I have to be forgiving to this one since the premise is so bizarre that like the fact that they made it work at all is impressive. basically Naruto fake accepts sasuke's fake proposal he's practicing as a prank and then they get forced to fake an engagement somehow? anyway like it was decent except the author apparently had a grudge against Gaara and made him the force of all hate in the world when in reality he's the force of all love, and they kept feminizing sasuke and like. the one thing I hate more than dominant top sasuke unnecessarily still hating Naruto even when they're "in love" is people making Naruto top but making sasuke basically be a girl. like the kids at the end call him mom, he gets a hen night not a stag night (apparently the author was British I guess), he wears the female wedding ring, they look at pictures of him in dresses, he's like. not a good top when he tries. and it bothers me like he's a dude let it be a gay relationship not a hetero one ft. "slash" or "yaoi"

  • A List of Available Smiles ★★★★ preety intense Dan depression fic? Alters actual relationship and life timelines quite a bit, but a good exploration of depression etc
  • The Mental Lexicon ☆ wow, a fic I legitimately did not like. it's basically a fic about biphobia but I don't think it's very good characterization in a way although it's not awful. my main issue is that when Phil came out in the fic the biggest issue he faced was biphobia not homophobia, and I really didn't like that? it felt special snowflake tumblr-y, and while biphobia in the LGBT community is an important issue it's also a complicated one. Dan feeling bitter that Phil in this fic could have a normal life with a girl if he fell in love with one is both fair and insensitive. people face oppression based primarily on same gender attraction, not whether or not they're "monosexual." also it tried to use linguistics terminology as a motif and I don't like it much :/
