genres: realistic fiction, ya, romance, contemporary

summary: A story about Libby (a girl who has had an unfortunate couple of years) who meets Jack (a boy diagnosed with Prosopagnosia).

thoughts: I was really anticipating this book because one of my favourite standalones is written by Jennifer Niven (All the bright places) but alas I was left disappointed. I just felt like she kept driving these characters as stock characters. Like the mean girl remained the mean girl. For Libby who was characterised as the 'different' girl - I felt like the author was just forcing her into a /quirky/ box with her listening to disco and her writing quotes on her shoes. It was all just very predictable to me. The romance wasn't even good. I guess what I did like about this though is that it started with a 'To Kill a Mockingbird' quote and has references to Taylor Swift. I also did like the messages of empowerment which I will quote some nice ones in the following section (just in case you needed to hear some nice things)

favourite quotes:

  • "You belong here as much as anyone. No one knows who you are. No one cares. You've got this, girl"
  • (This was just a funny quote to me) "He launched himself at me and held on like I was a floatation device and he was the last man off the titanic"
  • "If everyone who has something to say about me spent as much time on ... practicing kindness or developing a personality or a soul, imagine how lovely the world would be"

would I read this again? maybe in the far future

would I recommend this book? probably not, you'd probably be bored. What I do recommend is 'All the bright places' by Jennifer Niven
