this story takes place in a country called illiyad! it's a very religous country with an expansive mythology consisting of several goddesses, the two most important to the story being the goddess of life, sedia, and the goddess of death, aida. aida at some point long before the story takes place creates a mass war among the human race and sedia has to sacrifice herself so that the war ends, giving up her power so she is weak and must inhabit a human body along with the human already living in said body. the human is then called the host/hostess, and is currently being hunted down by aida's still-existing followers.
