MUSIC

  • Favorites
  • What is your favorite genre of music? - I'd probably say folk, with a mixture of singer/songwriter and Independent pop. Mostly mellow and sultry bits, but I'm big on female vocalists and also have a liking for Oldies, too.
  • Why?- I don't like the fact that the modern mainstream music industry does not showcase true talent. With Independent music and folk music, everything is raw. You don't have the opportunity to alter your voice. It's real talent that stems from real emotion. I can't get into any sort of lyrics that don't read like a confession or poem. The soulful and earthly sounds of folk singers are contrived of this sort of talented and heartfelt passion. Also, the songs fit my mood 90% of the time. Romance, sadness and longing. That's basically my life.
  • Name your favorite band(s): Devendra Banhart, Miniature Tigers, Laura Marling, Best Coast, Fleet Foxes, Ella Fitzgerald, Cat Power, Wild Belle, Beirut, Feist, The Lighthouse and the Whaler, Sons of an Illustrious Father, Marketa Irglova, Sigur Ros, Nina Kinert, Agnes Obel.
  • Name your favorite solo artist(s): I accidentally covered that in the previous question.
  • What is your favorite album?: Perhaps What Will We Be by Devendra Banhart, because it's got every mood concocted by God within its context.
  • What is your favorite album cover?: I love the new cover for Bat For Lashes' Haunted Man (the album wasn't my cup of tea this time; maybe I will have to adjust- however, the artwork was amazing and I think Natasha looked stunning. Interesting design and concept).
  • Name your favorite song(s): I can never get enough of First Song For B (Devendra Banhart) but I also love Egyptian Robes by Miniature Tigers, Riverside by Agnes Obel, Our Deal by Best Coast, Grown Ocean by Fleet Foxes and Venice by the Lighthouse and the Whaler.
  • Favorite CD you own: I don't really own any CDs I am proud of besides my Queen albums and Cyndi Lauper album. It's been a while since I haven't digitally purchased.
  • Favorite song on your computer: The same as I listed as my favorite songs in the first place.
  • Favorite song you DON'T have: I get all the songs that I love.
  • Favorite lyrics: That's a tough one, but I really think Quedate Luna has beautiful lyrics (Devendra Banhart) as far as I can understand.
  • Favorite vocalist: I'm infinitely impressed by Laura Marling (female) and Devendra Banhart (male).
  • Favorite guitarist: Don't have one. I'm more of a mellow person.
  • Favorite bassist: Couldn't even answer this.
  • Favorite drummer: Ezra Miller, just because.
  • Favorite instrumentalist (any instrument not mentioned above): My favorite pianist is Agnes Obel. She's a beautiful being.
  • Favorite classical / jazz composer: Infinite respect for Tchaikovsky.
  • Favorite rapper: Seryoga (Russia's No. 1!!!).

  • Favorite of anything not mentioned: I need direction! I can't just blurt everything out!
  • Dislikes in the music world
  • What's your least favorite genre of music? Modern pop, electro-pop, rap.
  • Who's your least favorite band? Pretty much everything on the radio spare Of Monsters and Men and Florence and the Machine.
  • Who's your least favorite solo artist? Taylor Swift. She gets so much recognition when she has the wits of a ten-year-old and the talent of my toenail.
  • Who do you think is the most annoying musician? Taylor Swift, once again.
  • If you could shoot any "artist" or "band", who would it be?- Nice to get violent here. Taylor Swift.
  • Who do you think is the least talented? Taylor Swift.
  • Least favorite song: We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together.
  • Most annoying song: And repeat.
  • Most repetitive song: And repeat.
  • Worst band that used to be good? Bat for Lashes! What happened!
  • A good band that used to suck? That happens?
  • Your musical background.
  • What was the first music you remember listening to?: I used to listen to whatever was playing in my house- quite the amalgam of sounds, ranging from classic orchestra, opera and strings to hard rock.
  • What type of music do your parents listen to?: My mom used to listen to a lot of classical, opera and etcetera. Kind of an alternative vibe to her as well. But then she got to be a pop junkie, and now she's entering the Indie pop scene. My dad is hardcore on the classic rock.
  • Do you play any musical instruments, or sing? If so, elaborate: Yes. I play a mean trombone, and used to play the violin. I wouldn't say I could sing, but I enjoy doing so.
  • Do you take lessons for instruments or voice? If so, for how long?: I learn from my peers in the band.
  • Do you plan to / have you gone to college for music?: No, but I'd like to keep playing my trombone.
  • Who are your musical inspirations?: I'd say that Laura Marling, Feist, Lilah Larson and the likes are because they're girls who can get to be sweet and gritty and really devote themselves to their music, in a way that is so raw and inspiring that it can move mountains.
  • Who was your first favorite band or artist?: Cyndi Lauper!
  • What styles of music are you interested in learning about?: I'd like to experiment in jazz and expand my knowledge of all the old, good stuff.
  • What styles of music do you already know a lot about?: Independent music. I'm the Queen of all the underground beauties that the gods bore for us.
  • Do you know much about musical theory? If not, would you like to?: I actually no quite a bit. I can't go too much in depth, though. I wouldn't mind knowing more. Notation, composure & jargon: I'm good to go on those.
  • If you take lessons, do you like your teacher(s)?: I love my band peers. Every time I'd go to an honors festival, and every day I'm in band, I always feel great about the music I'm making. Trombone players are usually pretty funky people and I love the community musicians make.
  • How many different music teachers do you have, or have you had?: I've had three that were all very influential.
  • This or that!
  • Classical or jazz?: I like both, but I have such a soft spot for classical, and it's great for studying and relaxing.
  • Classic rock or modern rock?: Classic rock all the way.
  • Rock or Rap?: Ew! Rap?! Rock n' roll baby.
  • Emo or Punk?: ... what? Neither?
  • Funk or Blues?: Mmmm, I love me some blues.
  • Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin?: Pink Floyd if you want to feel like a Queen. I know I do.
  • Bob Marley or Michael Franti?: I don't know who Michael Franti is, so Bob Marley (though I believe he's overrated).
  • Coldplay or Radiohead?: Oh, that's a tough one. I grew up on Coldplay and I love the raw, great lyrical stuff he did at the beginning of his career. Chris Marten's kind of taken a really mainstream route now, and it's disappointing. Radiohead never fell. But still, my heart says Coldplay.
  • Guster or Dispatch?: No idea.
  • John Mayer or Jack Johnson?: Neither.
  • Eminem or 50 Cent?: Over my dead body would I like either.
  • Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera?: No way. Neither.
  • Backstreet Boys or N'SYNC?: N'Sync!
  • The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?: Ehhhhh. Neither.
  • Beethoven or Mozart?: Beethoven!
  • Rachmaninoff or Debussy?: Mmmm, Claude Debussy!

  • Electric or acoustic?: Acoustic all the way.
  • Mandolin or ukulele?: Mandolin is such a beast instrument. I love it.

  • Miscellaneous.
  • Why do you like music?: It's one of the most honest art forms. It's been a source of pleasure for ages upon ages. It's a transport, a release, and it helps the world connect. It's an outward transference of the human experience.
  • When you're angry, what type of music do you listen to?: I don't get angry often enough.
  • Has music ever made you cry? When?: Oh yes! I always take my time to pay close attention to lyrics, and some lyrics bring me to tears.
  • Has music ever made you laugh? When?: Listen to Shabop Shalom by Devendra Banhart. Everything will be answered.
  • Do you like local music?: Yeah! My dad's a musician and both my parents are keen on the local music scene. We've got some pretty talented people in the area. I.e. Woodrow or Heather Maloney.

  • Do you like to sing, even if you don't consider yourself a singer? : Absolutely.
  • If you could meet any musician and ask them for advice, who would it be?: Lilah Larson. She seems to know a lot of junk and she's my total contemporary.
  • If you could just chill with any musician, who would it be?: Devendra Banhart or Lilah Larson.
  • What instrument that you don't play now would you like to learn next?: Piano!
  • Do you like foreign types of music? If so, what types? : Yes. I think it's a shame to limit the music catalog to just American music. There are talented musicians in every genre across the world, and I listen to them as often, if not more often, than I do to American musicians.
