HARVARD
- Dream school
- Less undergrad focus
- Worse dorms, but comparable to MIT's dorms.
- Separate freshman housing and dining at Annenberg.
- Visual and Environmental Studies major - good. But after that, what alternative majors are there at Harvard?
- In Boston/Cambridge
- The best of the best - sits as the standard for other schools (ex: Yale's slogan is 'so much better than Harvard.')
- Extremely competitive.
- Fairly conservative.
- Puritan minister mascot
- Visitas wasn't very good - people were less pre-frosh oriented and less welcoming than other schools, felt like more of a half-hearted effort. Less casual atmosphere.
- Charging money for everything!!!!!!!!!!
- Hazing scene - not welcoming to freshmen.
- Harvard square! awesome.
- Easier to study and receive good grades, so applying for opportunities after undergrad is easier.
- endless, incomparable opportunities in the arts and humanities
- connections in the fields i want - the classmates, professors, internships etc will all be in the humanities side - will meet the people who run the world in the future, the CEOs, wall-street guys, presidents, politicians, etc.
- can be inspired by the accomplishments of everyone there
- sense of community - through harvard yard, residential houses, etc.
- finals club scene is completely avoidable
- i’m NOT a science-math person, i can’t get excited about those things… so going to MIT would be really hard, and i would feel pressured, overwhelmed, and not confident in my abilities
- the liberal arts college education - gives you 4 years to really develop your thinking, writing and analytical skills
YALE
- New Haven is in the middle of nowhere in a sketchy area.
- The dorms are the best.
- Love the 'residential colleges' feel that stays throughout all 4 years.
- BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS
- Urban studies, architecture, art.
- Architecture is soft - drawing focused.
- Amazing art program
- Study abroad - no finaid so not paid... except Light Fellowship (asian class)
- the building bridges summer trip to china!
- lots of opportunities to talk with amazing humanities speakers (ex. masters teas)
- Dining program for first year only.
- Emphasis on dress/outward appearance
- Lots of funding!! also house funding
- Bulldog mascot.
- Lots of free food events!
- Always entertainment happenings on campus.
- Campus feeling - close-knit and lots of on-campus events.
- A- and A+ so the A- looses value.
- social life is awesome!!
MIT
- Desirable major options - Urban Planning, Architecture, Business, Comparative Media Studies, PoliSci - so many options!
- In Boston/Cambridge
- Welcoming atmosphere (no hazing - instead, compete to gain the favor of underclassmen)
- Cooperative atmosphere instead of competitive - no class rankings.
- No dining plan at some dorms!
- Bexley people are fun! also each dorm has own personality
- Can draw on walls!
- Free-spirited, no one judges you about personality/outward appearance
- Not a big arts/humanities focus, so speakers etc will be geared towards engineering and sciences and there will be less humanities opportunities
- Smaller humanities interest means that any arts opportunities will be easier to seize/gain funding for
- Less funding than Yale and Harvard because of the difference in alumni base.
- Amazing study-abroad opportunities through MISTI
- January IAP!
- Way too math-science based
- Beaver mascot......
- Known for creative parties.
