“I see,” renjun said, turning his back to jaemin to return to typing, and jaemin could hear the amusement in his tone.

If he only knew, he’s been wanting to go to the match because Yukhei is there and Renjun knows that Yukhei makes Donghyuck all tongue-tied. Donghyuck pretends he hates Yukhei because he’s loud and obnoxious, but the crush is irrefutable.
If anyone knows a thing or two about crushes on basketball players, it’s Renjun.
“we should go for a snack. there are lots of food stalls near-” he found his own voice trailing off to a sight of a boy standing a few meters away, looking up on their booth banner that says ‘FACE PAINTING’ in boldly painted letters.
“needless to say, i think the snack is already right in front of you.” donghyuck teased. chenle laughed at the statement.
"try again next week, baby." renjun punctuates his rejections with the sweetest of kisses, so soft and tender that jaemin can't exactly be upset about it. (though he is, because why) "now, now, don't pout. i'm sure you'll get it right eventually."

Summer of 2018 rolls around, and when Na Jaemin's picture-perfect world of parties, soccer wins, and girls start to lack the excitement it originally had, he rides his boat along the coast of Sokcho in search of something exhilarating to do.
What he didn't expect to find was a boy--pretty brown eyes, small shoulders, sharp tongue--on the beach, in uncharted terrain far from the city.
And in that boy, Na Jaemin finds the exhilaration he'd been looking for.
Jaemin falls in love.

Renjun believes in ghosts, round Earth (to Donghyuck's utter disbelief), and second chances (to his utter disbelief).
On a summer night in the month of July, he chances upon an archangel with stellar skies for eyes and a beaming smile, whose offer of warm hands and comforting presence aids Renjun in more ways than one..
“Hold on, my eyes are burning,” Jaemin said, pressing hard against his left eye. He stayed there for a long moment before pulling in another breath, shaking himself until he was sat up straight. “Now, everyone, there’s something I’m going to do today. Something that I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.”
Jaemin added in videos of him and Renjun as he spoke, the first an old video of them, young and newly dating, back in their junior year. “Today, I’m going to ask my best friend to marry me.”
If Jaemin has one rule in life, it's to never take advice from a cabbage.

They’d been recording Dream vs Dream and Jaemin's questions had been the opposite of straight. He’d even brought up the couples bracelet again. Renjun had realised why people tweeted #renmin at him whenever he came online.
Now, listen. Jaemin was sleep deprived, hungry, and his brain cells were fried. Even Jaemin’s surprised he lasted this far. So, he thinks his next course of action was understandable and justifiable. Because here was Renjun, the boy who had been on his mind for weeks now. Renjun, who looks like he’s going to give him free food. Renjun, who’s smiling reluctantly at him. Just, the mere existence of Renjun and his oh, so beautiful timing and face. Jaemin’s brain short-circuited.
“I love you.”
He sees Jaemin, blinding and bright.
He certainly stands out in the crowd, pink hair distinct in a palette of black and brown.
They meet eyes, and Jaemin draws near, near, near. He eyes Renjun, gaze uncanny, and his hands slide down his arm, tracing a gentle line before calloused fingers find their way into soft ones, intertwining.
Jaemin’s hands are cold.
(Renjun wakes up with goosebumps.)
Boom era has a lot in store for Renjun. He just can’t stop counting the days that are important for him. Until one day, he decided to stop counting.
“You said you wanted to marry me!”
“That was when we were in fifth grade!
The treehouse had always been the only thing Renjun had for himself -his oasis to escape the violent shouts that rang through thin walls. What Renjun didn't rely on was the boy who'd come to claim the small platform as his own, trading discarded sour hard candy for a spot beside Renjun's own on the wooden abode.
Renjun's content with just being a fan of Jaemin. Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately) his friends love to meddle.

Different people had their different definitions of love; This was Jaemin's.
According to Dr. Qian, Jaemin has to be some kind of animal magnet. Renjun disagrees; it’s just the universe trying to ruin his life again. Or where Jaemin keeps coming into Renjun’s life, but always with a catch.
Renjun should really stop gawking at Jaemin before the boy notices but he was too late. Jaemin caught his gaze when the boy looked over at Jungsan's side of the court. Renjun was about to avert his gaze when Jaemin smirked, ran his fingers over his newly dyed pink hair, messing it up even more, and, honest to God, winked at Renjun.
"Fuck." Or, alternatively: the five times Na Jaemin has been nothing but Huang Renjun's rival on the court and the one time he became something more.
If Renjun had to explain how he got himself into this situation, he wouldn’t be able to give an exact answer. Maybe it had started when Jaemin suggested the whole thing, a "deal" between them. Or maybe when he saw Donghyuck walking towards him, letter in hand, and Renjun had decided to run away.
All he knows is that now his four letters are out in the open, and he's so, so screwed.

When Renjun accepted the offer to act as the rival of South Korea's boy-next-door in a serial drama, encountering love was the last thing on his mind.
or, rising star in the acting industry, Huang Renjun, finally meets (his biggest fan) esteemed actor, Na Jaemin.
Jaemin counted aloud the pictures, yelling, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5!” “1, 2, 3, 4, 5,” Renjun translated simply, catching Jaemin’s eye. “No, you can’t say it like that,” he responded. “5–” Renjun let out a chuckle and repeated, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5!” – A mere second-year linguistics major in college, Renjun figured that being raised bilingual in Jilin wasn’t sufficient enough to work as an interpreter for one of the most popular K-pop boy groups in the world, but he had submitted his résumé anyway. Somehow, he found himself in a chair a few feet away from several managers and cameramen, a Super Idol League: Season 5 script in his hands.
“Less than a hundred to go. I have to say, Jaem, I’m feeling kind of smothered.” “Oh, wow— smothered? By me? Na Jaemin? Who would’ve thought?"

“Hello,” Jaemin called out, catching the boy’s attention, “can I help you?” The boy nodded, and stumbled over to the desk. “Yes,” he said resolutely, “I’m Renjun and I want to get a tattoo.” or when a very drunk renjun comes stumbling into jaemin's tattoo parlor at 1am, begging for a tattoo of vodka on his butt, jaemin falls head over heels.
Away from the city lights and high rises, for the first time in fourteen years, Na Jaemin comes home. He comes home, to a place beyond the mountains where the river sings and the tall grass dance. To a place where a boy, raven-black hair and striking eyes, shows him what it means to live. And what it means to lose.
or Na Jaemin is a university student coming back to his old home to work on his thesis, where he meets Huang Renjun again, his childhood friend with a taste for sharp remarks and pretty scenic views.
"What are you doing here, Jaem? Aren’t you usually losing at King’s Cup right around this time?” He earns a pinch to his right ankle for that.
It’s somewhat of a risky move to be asking Jaemin this sort of question, to expose himself and how much he pays attention to Jaemin when the other is not looking. A calculated risk but oh, the payoff is so worth it.
(Renjun was expecting a quiet break from the party. He gets something a lot better.)

“Why me?” Jaemin asks, legs dangling from over the railing of his bunk bed. There’s a bottle of Smirnoff Mule in his hands, but he’s far from being drunk at all.
Across the room, tangled in his blankets, Renjun sips on his own drink. “What do you mean?”
His best friend looks down at his lap. “Why… did you fall in love with me?” Some years ago, Huang Renjun was in love with Na Jaemin. It was quite possibly one of the worst emotional turmoils he’s had to go through, if not also the stupidest.
Really, what was worse than falling in love with your best friend?
Na Jaemin only meets Huang Renjun in the night, sitting near a stream where the wind whispers strange stories and moonlight flickers on the water’s surface. Renjun, who sits there every night waiting for someone who never comes, let’s Jaemin fill in his gap. And Jaemin, who escapes there from his nightmares, lets Renjun break down his walls.
Or: Jaemin has a fear of water. Yet Renjun spends all of his time near it.
being in college, they don't get to choose how they want to spend their days. they have to prioritize their studies, responsibilities to their orgs, and catching up with their friends and families.
but one thing is for sure, if they are given the freedom to choose, they will choose to be with each other in a heartbeat.
"You already live in the city, why move to a beach town with nothing much to do here?" Renjun asks, his curiosity getting the best of him but his facade doesn't change for a moment.
"You have a beach and crazy waves, and for me, that's all I need for an exciting life."
Jaemin tries his very hardest to be sincere. It doesn’t always work.

Jaemin didn’t know which one was harder – the act of loving or moving on. What he did know, however, was that he shouldn’t be kissing his ex like this, bodies so close together that they could almost become one.
Perhaps, resisting Huang Renjun was the hardest thing.
"I don't ride anymore," Renjun says. Jaemin feels a surge of vertigo, the overlapping images of past and present splitting apart. Renjun and his bike were one and the same once, just like it is still for Jaemin, Donghyuck, and Jeno. Losing the ride would be like losing a limb.
It reminds Jaemin that things aren’t the same.

Renjun was stuck taking care of Haechan’s poor dog, who wouldn’t stop barking every time someone walked into the room, while Haechan was throwing the party of the year—probably making out with Mark on the couch or dancing atop the kitchen table.
Okay, that was an exaggeration. But Renjun was bored, and he wanted to go home, and he wished he hadn’t promised to keep an eye on Haechan’s dog. And then a boy stumbled in, and miraculously, Walter didn't bark.
Renjun was determined to stay annoyed, but the boy was kinda cute.
Renjun can talk to plants.
It's not something he likes to brag about. In fact, he tries to hide it. But it's getting harder to do so when his crush, Na Jaemin, keeps randomly appearing out of nowhere at just the right moments.
Renjun and Jaemin have liked each other for as long as they can remember. The only thing stopping them from getting together is the fact that Renjun is pretty sure Jaemin is totally straight, having only ever dated girls before, and Jaemin is pretty sure Renjun only thinks of him as a friend. The thing is, it's all just assumptions.
In short, things get way more complicated than they need to be.

“Dude, just spare a look at them.” Jeno nudges his chin. Jaemin gazes towards the direction, discovering a group of girls a few tables away currently staring at them, or him, specifically. Caught in the act, they hastily whip their heads back to the front, embarrassment evident on their faces.
“How can you betray their image of you?” Jeno whispers harshly. “How will they sleep well at night knowing you listen to fucking Celine Dion and what the fuck, was that Fergie?!” (Or: Jaemin lives and breathes pop, and his soulmate is the entire opposite.)
Life likes to throw curveballs at Jaemin sometimes, curveballs where Jaemin can’t help but think “wow, I am so fucked.”
Like right now, where there is a spaceship in his backyard at two in the morning.

In which Jaemin is a book character that keeps coming to life and Renjun is the reader that has to deal with him every single time.
Huang Renjun has never been a romantic. Sure, he enjoys a nice, romantic drama every now and then, and Love Actually is one of his most favourite films of all time, but realistically, Huang Renjun is a pragmatist. Through and through.
Which is why he has no idea what the fuck a single rose and small pink envelope is doing in his locker.
(Alternatively: Roses are red, violets are blue, Renjun has a secret admirer, and he's utterly, screwed.)
"Jaemin Na?" Minjeong says. “My friend said once she was in the Engineering hall computer lab after hours, and she saw Jaemin Na baby-talking into thin air, like there was someone invisible in front of him."
Yizhuo nods conspiratorially, and lowers her voice to a whisper. "I heard if you go to the library at 11 PM while holding a 100% sugar no-ice Taro milk tea from Gong Cha, and whisper his name three times in a row, he appears."
"Okay," Renjun laughs. "You guys are making him sound like an urban legend, or something. He’s just some dude."
"Wow," Haechan says, gleefully. "I always knew you were a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but I had no idea you would go so far as to fuck our local campus cryptid."
(Or: Renjun hooks up with Jaemin Na, who is not-a-cryptid but is also not-not-a-cryptid, and it all spirals from there.)
“You just had my undivided attention for an hour,” Renjun tells him, one hand stroking over the nape of his neck. With all the tender sweetness of someone who knows exactly how much power he holds. “Don’t be greedy. It doesn’t suit you.”
It’s your fault, Jaemin wants to scream. I was never greedy for anything until I met you.
(Jaemin can’t buy love, but he can buy Renjun’s time, and it’s enough. Until it's not.)
All makeup artists love to work with those quiet, unassuming idols who are willing to let them do their magic, and Renjun's not an exception. It's just his luck that Na Jaemin is the exact opposite. He is loud, eccentric, and he also won’t stop calling Renjun baby, goddamnit.
Renjun bumped into the school's heartthrob, Na Jaemin, in the library. And the unexpected happening was just the start of the unexpected turn of events.
“So you don’t want to be friends with benefits?” Jaemin munches on the cookie, head tilted curiously. But, he has that look on his face. “What? I thought you wanted me to be a freak again.”
“Not a sex freak!”
“I think you’ll find that if you make a Venn diagram, there is quite a bit of overlap.” He draws out two large circles in the air (Renjun is surprised that sparkles aren’t appearing with the invisible motion- like he’s in a Disney Channel Original) and he points to each shape. “Freaks. Sex Freaks.” He then points to the middle. “Me.”
Renjun splutters.
Renjun’s first thought while meeting little Park Jisung is that, well, he’s not that bad.
Which would be a weird conclusion to draw about a three-year-old, except the babysitting ad put out by his parents had been slightly…weird. (“Something’s off,” as Donghyuck had said.) (“Sus vibes”—that one was his boyfriend, Mark.)
Never take candies from strangers. But maybe this one time is okay, Renjun thinks.
