What is the average length of stay in the program? 3 yrs f-t, sometimes 4 (by choice) f-t coursework for 2 yrs
Licensure in VA? 4000 hrs clinical, 200 hrs
What type of funding is available? GAs? Fellowships? How competitive are these? Can I practice on the side? all students have always had assistantships! $13000 aug-may; pays 85% of insurance policies some students practice on the side; eap counseling, crisis assessment--high-needs caseload discouraged
Ask about possibility to replace clinical internship w/ counselor ed internship? assess doctoral students
Ask about comps: "preliminary examination" at end of coursework; talk about literature
do many students present at aca? a lot at ACA and ACES (esp ACES) and SACES
How many students do you accept per year? What is your acceptance rate? only admit 3-4 students/yr; 35 applicants. also at northern va; 100 hrs advanced practicum usually teach 2 masters classes
What is the average GRE score of your admitted students? not required! more important to look at where they are in their life
Do you use a cohort model? yes
Do you have a chapter of CSI? How active are they? masters students generally hold offices; emerging leaders @ ACES
How are students matched with their faculty advisors? initially assigned; at year-and-a-half point, then you decide chair of dissertation
Applicants should know what they're getting themselves into :-) make sure it fits career goals
Program has been around for 30, doctoral program about 25 yrs one program is president-elect of ACES; teaching internships in summer; start supervising people immediately; has campuses all over; main is in Blacksburg; some in Northern VA as well; many classes done on tv; near aca headquarters and nimh; interview process w/ faculty, students, writing, mock counseling session; clinic staffed by masters students
