1. andromeda - lelek (5/5)

  • i’ll get to reviewing this soon, but this is among my favourite entries ever (the cultural nuances and lyricism are making it hard to do justice to)
    • an interview with them: +
    • everyone has the right to freedom, equality, and belonging, regardless of the circumstances they come from. it is not tied to one place, one time, or one group of people, but to the fundamental right to exist and to be accepted for who you are.

on the symbolism and significance of sicanje

  • an introduction from sicanje museum
  • sicanje speaks to a very specific historical situation in which the body became a means of protection and preserving identity. it is a practice born out of necessity, fear, threat, and extremely limited choices. in that sense, it clearly speaks about limitations and about a context in which women had to make difficult decisions in order to avoid a certain fate. at the same time, there is also an element of reclaiming control within it. in a situation where there are almost no choices, the decision to mark the body becomes a way of retaining at least a part of one’s autonomy. today, that motif opens up a broader question of how free we truly are and where the boundaries of that freedom lie, even when we believe there are none.
