• Trilobites and Horseshoe Crabs
  • Artificial selection of Fancy Pigeons from Rock Pigeons
  • Fossil records. A shell fossil(when might have that animal lived? millions of years ago?!) is in the kitchen of Mrs. Kapoor.

  • Sexual reproduction in plants. One flower may have both the sexes but it cant reproduce on its own due to different timings at which the sexual organs mature!!

  • Struggle for existence and infinitely complex relationship between all animal and plants.
  • Natural selection - circumstances affecting it. isolation, number of individuals, intercrossing. its power on all sexes and at all ages.
  • Secondary sex characteristics
  • The part or organ which is repeated many times in a structure in the same individual, the number is variable(vertebrae in snakes). pg 94
  • The more the organ normally differs in the different species of the same group, the more subject it is to individual anomalies. - Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. for ex. maybe hairs of different races of human beings. this is wat i could think quickly of about the application of the rule.
  • just search horse breeds on wiki! shit! also mules, asses, zebras, quaggas, hemionus.
  • flying squirrels flying fishes(can fly upto 200 mtrs!!) flying lemur
  • "How a nerve comes to be sensitive to light, hardly concerns us more than how life itself originated." this is absolutely lyrical! pg 118, on the process of natural selection 'producing' a complex eye.
  • nature is prodigal in variety but niggard in innovation! - Milne Edwards' quote
  • Natura non facit saltus - Nature does not make jumps
  • Correlation of growth - empirical law describing the interdependency between development of different organs in species.
  • Extinction through natural selection and principle of divergence. Greater competition -> large no. of variations -> large no. of species which gives way to extinction of species whose population is smaller, maybe the ones living in intermediate areas of nature. (Mountain and land living species are in large numbers and the ones living on slopes have smaller population. therefore the variation in species living on mountains and land will be far more than that in those living on slopes, which will give them more chance to be more 'perfect' in the epochs of time. this may naturally endanger the smaller less perfect intermediate species.) this is how natural selection aids extinction. this is one of the ways how 99.99% of species are already extinct in last i donno 3 or somethin billion years!
  • slave making ants
  • reciprocal cross.
  • hybrids - cross between species and mongrels - cross between varieties!
  • Variations are the result of reproductive system being emintenly sensitive to any change in the condition of life. Its the REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM which gets affected!
  • At the end of a passage describing geological imperfection, strata and how slowly the ocean corrodes the shoreland rocks and cliffs with innumerable variables acting on the process, he says poetically, "The consideration of these facts impresses my mind almost in the same manner as does the vain endeavour to grapple with the idea of eternity".
