    • originally a josei manga by yamaji ebine. one of the most popular ones. odd plot twist, but oh my god.
  • topless (2008) ★ ★
    • i think i’m being too generous with two stars. other viewers would rate it lower than that. very boring and dragging. two stars for effort, and the potential of the concept that deserved better execution.
  • brulee (2008)
  • kakera: a piece of our life (2009)
  • natural woman (2010)
  • tsuyako (2011)
  • shady (かしこい狗は、吠えずに笑う) (2012) ★ ★ ★
    • all-girls school plot, which is generally popular in asia. i honestly liked this film. the ending is a twist that’s sort-of-but-not-really expected. depends on how much of this genre you’ve watched.

korea

  • memento mori (1999) ★ ★ ★ ★
    • part of the whispering corridors film series set in an all-girls high school in south korea (this is the second film, and the only one with the lesbian plot), but can definitely be watched individually. a horror film, but more touching and sad than anything. i loved this one.
  • bongja (2000)
  • hellcats/some like it hot (2008) ★ ★ ★ ★
    • the story doesn’t center around the lesbian plot, but the whole storyline in itself is really good, especially since it centers around strong, female characters. definitely worth a watch.
  • ashamed/life is peachy (2010)
  • daughters of club bilitis (2011)
  • two weddings and a funeral (2012) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    • the whole movie centers around lgbt people in seoul, and it’s an amazing movie all in all. there are no words to describe just how utterly beautiful and heartwarming this movie is. the characters are diverse and definitely well-casted. it’s witty, funny, well-written, and an absolute must-watch.
  • in my end is my beginning (2013) ★ ★
    • it’s honestly not that bad but it’s 2/5 stars for the lack of actual lesbians until 75 minutes into the movie. watching the short film version of this would be better, but if you’re into artsy metaphorical interpretations, then go for it. #SYMBOLISM

  • yes or no (2010) ★ ★ ★
    • very cute, to say the least. it’s light-hearted, which is a change from all the lesbian drama. while it’s not really my type (because annoying lead), a lot of people loved this one, so it’s definitely worth a watch.

canada

  • when night is falling (1995) ★ ★ ★
  • high art (1998)
  • better than chocolate (1999)
  • lost and delirious (2001) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    • people either really hate it (98%) or really loved it (2%), there is no in-between, and i am part of the latter. this is honestly one of my favorite movies just because it seemed rather poetic, but also realistic, in a sense. (and having piper perabo as the lead definitely didn’t hurt.)

  • bound (1996)
  • foxfire (1996)
  • all over me (1997)
  • gia (1998) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    • about the tragic life of one of america’s first supermodels, gia carangi, who died of aids at the peak of her career. touching story, beautiful dialogue, and absolutely heart-wrenching all in all. angelina jolie and elizabeth mithchell gave a powerful and stunning performance. one of my favorite movies of all time.
  • but i’m a cheerleader (1999) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    • a super light-hearted satirical film about “gay away” camps. super funny, with very witty dialogue and scenes. watch natasha lyonne’s first lesbian role before orange is the new black, and the fantastic clea duvall. (and, of course, rupaul.)
  • the truth about jane (2000) ★ ★ ★ ★
    • people say this was their first lesbian film, and that should definitely say something. courageous, very realistic and easy to relate to, with amazing performances by ellen muth and stockard channing. i shed a lot of tears because most, if not all of us, felt the same way at one point in our lives.
  • if these walls could talk 2 (2000)
  • kissing jessica stein (2001)
  • the hours (2002) ★ ★ ★ ★
  • the film does not focus on the lesbian plot in itself, and does not even dwell much on it. it features the oscar-award winner, nicole kidman, as virginia woolf, and the story revolves around a day in the life of two other people -- in different years -- that were affected by her novel, mrs. dalloway. a beautiful, albeit heartbreaking, movie.

    • lesbians and musicals – finally, right? which queer person wouldn’t enjoy this movie? this supposed prequel to the cult web series girltrash, directed and written by angela robinson, is hilarious, and, more or less, quite relatable. with songs written and produced by the band, killola (with lisa rieffel, vocalist, co-starring in the movie), they will get stuck in your head days after watching the movie.

    • exquisite cinematography. the main problem of the film is that it’s super dragging – especially for a film that’s three hours long. so, let me help you: the dramatic scenes start at the two-hour mark. adele exarchopoulos and leya sedoux, however, were marvelous in their portrayal, and the film’s ending isn’t exactly what one would expect. it’s worth a watch so you could figure out all the hype for yourself.

  • room in rome (2010) ★ ★ ★ ★
    • the storyline should have been completely unrealistic, but the actresses – elena anaya and natasha yarovenko – gave great emotion and life to their characters that such a quixotic situation seemed totally believable. they spent almost the whole movie practically naked, but by the time the credits roll in that big of a detail detail would surprisingly become that of little importance.

    • this was hella fucked up. not your average all-girls school film. not that it’s a bad movie – on the contrary, even. this deals with complex situations, and compelling characters amazingly portrayed by the likes of the eva green, juno temple, and maria valverde. if you’re looking for something light, then you better skip this because this movie gets real dark real fast. i rate 2/5 for the queerness, but 3/5 as a whole.
