byte, it/its & that thing/it

appearance & personality

  • byte is a sentient vintage radio with large, curved mandibles on top that is similar to the cicindela chinensis (or in other words, a chinese tiger beetle.)
  • it is often described as a zany and individualistic yet benevolent home appliance.

description

  • byte can enter the elevator in the button competition floor in the storage room on the top of the rack, but only after a player manages to open the closed door and find it. the player can pick it up and give it to the npcs for them to pick it up instead and carry it with them. however, it will refuse to be picked up or enter the elevator if pilby, prototype, reddy, dr. retro, wallter and split isn't there.
    • if the elevator is already full, it can still enter since it is considered more of an item than an actual npc. this makes it one of the two npcs who can break the max loading capacity of the elevator.
    • if MR is present in the elevator, byte will simply dissipate from the player's inventory. however, if the floor ends and the player hasn't given it to a trusted npc, that thing will not be present in the elevator, dissipating from the player's inventory.
    • EXTRA: "why would it not want to enter if certain npcs aren't present in the elevator?" the reason why they won't enter is because 1) that thing considers the npc as its safe person or a familiar face that is friendly to it as its convenience and comfortability is very important to it and 2) robots or machines as byte finds itself inexplicably drawn to others that are also machines/devices.
  • it can also enter the elevator in the olden days floor on the top of the bookcase, but only after a player manages to open the glass door and get it to a trusted npc.
    • byte randomly switches its location as well; it sometimes appears on the right side of the counter.
  • it is nonverbal; it communicates through the use of morse code. when another machine is within its vicinity, it instead communicates by transmitting radiowaves that are converted into soundwaves.
  • it's portable! it has a strap that is attached to their body and needs to be brought around via strap by another npc [or player*] of its choice as it cannot move by itself due to its lack of mobility.
    • if a player carries it, they will gain the slowness effect which slows the player down by 20%.
  • it's a collector of many, many things... it keeps it all in its body, so it'll occasionally tell a npc to open its back cover and put the object of interest inside for it.
    • if byte has collected a total of 5 items and a player is carrying it, the player will gain the anvil effect which makes them much slower by 60%.
  • it plays static by default but receives and plays short audio broadcasts from the manmade deities on a low volume of 25% on a few specific floors.

floors

  • will do this soon... ok? don't worry about it man

trivia

  • this is the sound that thing's buttons make when interacted with. it's the sound of a door being opened and closed in the sandbox game called minecraft.
  • it can open the back cover, revealing gotchi and its metal insides. maybe its collection too, if it has already collected items while it's inside the elevator.
