  • Vertigo (1958) Score composed by Bernard Herrmann
  • Now considered one of Hitchcock's greatest films, Vertigo (1958) actually received a poor response at the time of release. It's the story of a retired San Francisco police detective, Scottie, who suffers from acrophobia yet needs to follow Madeleine, his friend's wife, to high places as she contemplates suicide. Bernard Herrmann's score was conducted and recorded in Europe due to a musicians' strike in the US at the time. Director Martin Scorsese is quoted as saying, "Hitchcock's film is about obsession, which means that it's about circling back to the same moment, again and again ... And the music is also built around spirals and circles, fulfilment and despair. Herrmann really understood what Hitchcock was going for - he wanted to penetrate to the heart of obsession.
