The splinters, or facets, represent a variety of fragments of the overall identity, clearly distinct from each other and simultaneously pieces of the same whole, collectively named Emily. The antagonists are personifications of the various personal demons which plague the thought process and drown out logic in favor of intrusive thoughts or impulses which can bring everything to a grinding halt. Hope is the main coordinator.
