- present your points in a logical order
- make your points clearly in the fewest possible words
- don't tell the reader what he already knows
- make no assumptions about what the reader knows
- leave out unnecessary anecdotes and examples
- avoid lengthy phrases when a short word will do (i.e. "At this point in time" with "now")
- active verbs tend to make shorter sentences than passive verbs
- don't ramble. when you've made your point, stop writing
