=================================================================== Tanya’s Fashion Rules to Shop By:

DEFINITIONS:

  • Layering Piece: Cardigan or Blazer or Bolero
  • Under top:
  • Independent tops - tops that can stand on their own (without any layering elements aka cardigan, blazer) - specifically for skirts
  • Neutral Bases – sleeveless shell with some interest such as vertical ruffle or tie neck. Must be a neutral shade like white, ivory, beige, even pastels
  • Neutral Print Bases – sleeveless shell with a print over a neutral background like white, ivory, beige
  • RULE # 1: Lace looks best with paired with the same color underneath. Ex: sheer lace black top with a black tank under. Sheer lace white top with a white top under.
  • RULE # 2: 'Just borrow the sleeve' for sleeveless tops. Keep it the same color for a clean look.
  • RULE # 3: Belts make a world of a difference to an outfit.
  • RULE # 4: Button down shirts are a god sent - when it comes to pencil skirts and use of its collar for layering. You have so many options with them
    • Use the collar under V-neck sweaters
    • Under blazers
    • Wear a vest over
  • RULE # 5: V-necks tops elongate you. Plus, it's a great way to incorporate some more color to the outfit through the tank underneath.
  • RULE # 6: Ways of creating a pop of color to an outfit
    • Pair of shoes (Ex. Black Top + Black & White Print Skirt + Red Pumps)
    • Tie Neck Shell underneath a V neck dress, or sweater, or tee. Great way to incorporate color into an otherwise drab outfit.
    • Jewelry like earrings or bracelet
    • Scarf
    • Belt
    • Clutch
  • RULE # 7: The base should be lighter than the layering piece. With darker bases, you are generally limited to either black or charcoal grey as the layering piece. You can’t do other neutral layering color options like white, camel or ivory. EXCEPTION: Pastel bases and a lighter layering piece work.
  • RULE # 8: Dark, rich, jewel tone color tops must be independent. They are more appropriate for after work events. It cannot be a base because a dark base leaves limited layering options per RULE # 7. For example: a little black dress has to be independent.
  • Neutral Print Bases – create more interest. Inspiration: Neutral print base + Solid Color Pencil Skirt + Cardigan/Blazer
    • neutral rather than strong, rich colors under cardigans and blazers because the print peeks through much better on lighter colors
    • Cardigans & Blazers - more vibrant rich colors

IMAGINATIVE VS. UNIMAGINATIVE OUTFITS

  • Black and Gray for work only
  • Solid over Solid rather than Print and Solid or Color - Texture - Patern
  • Lack of color
  • Lack of accessories - pop of color shoes, belt, jewelry
