Mexican Gothic Chapter 5

• Catalina says there is a dampness, darkness, and coldness to the house.

• Catalina tells Noemi that Noemi must find Mart Duval in town to get medicine for Catalina that she has ran out of. • Catalina tells Noemi to hush when she asks what kind of medicine it is.

• Catalina says, “It’s in the walls” and claims there are ghosts that Noemi will eventually start seeing.

• Noemi is introduced to Catalina’s doctor, Arthur Cummins.

• Virgil and Noemi beef about getting a second opinion from a psychiatrist.

• Noemi has a nightmare about a golden ghostly woman in a yellow dress.

Chapter 6

• Noemi asks Francis if she could borrow one of the family’s cars.

• Noemi goes into town and meets Dr. Camarillo and tells him she would like a second opinion for Catalina.

• Dr. Camarillo lets Noemi know that the Doyle family always had their own physician, and he would most likely not be welcomed there.

• Dr. Camarillo also says that there were several epidemics of a mystery illness when Arthur Cummins senior also tended to them.

• Noemi convinces Dr. Camarillo to come to High Place and asks if he knows a Marta Duval.

• Marta tells Noemi that the family is cursed.

• Ruth, Mr. Doyle’s daughter shot the family: her groom, mother, aunt, uncle, and father, but he survived.

• Florence had hid Virgil away.

• Ruth killed herself after.

• Florence marries a young man named Richard.

• He begins to start seeing ghosts, spirits, and the evil eye.

• He dies and leaves behind his son Francis.

• Marta says that everything they touch rots.

Chapter 7

• Florence starts chewing out Noemi for borrowing a car, going into town, and smoking in her room.

• Virgil tells Noemi that not to worry about breaking the house “rules.”

• Noemi has another nightmare.

Chapter 8 • Dr. Camarillo arrives at High Place.

• He sees Catalina and says that although he is not a psychiatrist, she should see one.

Chapter 9

• Noemi and Francis go mushroom picking in the cemetery.

• They kind of have beef.

Chapter 10

• Francis and Noemi make plans to go to town.

• Noemi starts asking questions about Ruth and what happened, and Francis shuts down.

• Francis tells Noemi they must leave early to go to town and that Noemi should tell no one.

• Florence tells Noemi to leave Francis alone.

• Florence says that she was meant to live and die in High Place.

Chapter 11

• Noemi has a nightmare about the house and Ruth.

• Noemi ends up sleep walking and is woken by Virgil.

• Howard is ill and loud moaning is heard through the house.

• Noemi is sure that the house is haunted.
